영어 단어의 스펠링이 바뀜에 따라 단어의 의미가 어떻게 변하는지를 쉽고 재미있게 배울 수 있는 책입니다.

Caldecott Medal 수상작인 "Wolf in the Snow"를 비롯해서 국내에도 다수의 번역서가 출간된 베스트셀러 작가인 매튜 코델의 대표작 중 하나입니다.

무스사슴을 의미하는 단어 MOOSE에서 S가 떨어져 나가고 E가 도망가는 바람에 무스사슴이 사라져 버리고 소의 울음소리인 MOO만 남게 되었어요. 소는 가장 친한 친구인 무스사슴이 사라져 버리자, GLUE라는 단어를 만들어서 접착제를 얻은 후, 사라진 S와 E를 찾아와서 MOO에 붙이기로 했어요.

우선 낮잠자고 있는 곰(BEAR)의 B를 몰래 자져 와서 염소(GOAT)의 G와 교환을 했어요. 염소 GOAT는 졸지에 BOAT(보트)가 되어 버렸고, B를 잃어버린 곰(BEAR)는 귀(EAR)가 되어 버렸네요.

그 다음은 L을 구해야 했는데 마침 앞에 호수(LAKE)가 있네요. 소는 곰이 자고 있었던 의자(CHAIR)에서 C를 가져와서 호수의 L자와 바꿨어요. 덕분에 호수(LAKE)는 케익(CAKE)이 되어 버렸어요.

이제 U자와 E자만 구하면 되는데, 처음에는 거친 황소(BULL)에게서 U를 가져오려고 했지만, 황소가 공격하는 바람에 집(HOUSE)에 숨게 되고...

Can Cow save his best friend Moose who has vanished when two of his letters come loose? Cow causes lots of trouble as he tries to find a way to replace Moose's missing letters 'S' and 'E'. Silliness oozes from the pages of this rhyming adventure. Confusion and mayhem rule as Cow borrows letters from other animals, especially from "Bear who is asleep in his chair." Bull is not pleased with Cow's shenanigans and he chases him throughout the story. Cordell's simple ink-and-watercolor illustrations aptly portray the animal characters who are fun and likable. Managing to escape from Bull and causing lots of commotion, Cow finally does find the missing letters and Moose returns to the story. VERDICT A fun adventure for a reader who enjoys words, rhyming, and silliness.

Cordell’s line and watercolor art is zippy perfection, his familiar loose-limbed scribbles adding a sense of barely contained chaos as Cow bipedally scampers through the scenes. This is orthographical humor at its best, and it could inspire a freestanding swap-one-letter game once the book closes.
