While there's less plot-altering drama in this installment than in the previous three books, Mia's diary entries are as hilarious as ever, and readers will be cheering for more. The fourth volume in the popular "Princess Diaries" series covers just over a month, beginning December 21 in Genovia, where Princess Amelia (a.k.a. Mia) is getting further indoctrination into her royal world. Grandmere (the Queen of Genovia) has little patience for Mia's preoccupation with Michael, who just happens to be spending the holiday break in Florida where Mia is sure he will meet a perfect surfer girl. Mia obsesses over her lack of any discernible talent, pines endlessly for Michael, and starts a nationwide debate over parking meters in Genovia. Meanwhile, Grandmere tries to pair Mia with the renegade playboy Prince Rene, an ideal match for a photo op. But not even Prince Rene or a meeting with Prince William can detract Mia from her American boyfriend. All the whining and pining could get tiresome from a less experienced writer, but Cabot makes sure readers stick with Mia for her spunk, her references to pop culture, and the pure romance and humor of it all. In the end, Michael Moscovitz is still Mia's idea of the perfect prince뾞 chess playing, computer-loving smart guy who helps Mia see that she uses her own talent every day in her writing. The latest in the Princess Diaries (Princess in Love, 2002, etc.) is as hilarious and enjoyable as its predecessors. Gangly 14-year-old New Yorker Mia may be the princess of the small European country of Genovia, but that's about all she can see going for her. Besides, being a princess can really cut into one's social schedule. Mia is in Genovia, attending to her princessly duties over her winter break, when the story opens. With no easy access to a phone or the Internet, she has a hard time keeping in touch with her new boyfriend Michael Moscowitz. Not a problem, her scheming Grandm?e contends, and suggests Mia read Jane Eyre to get ideas on how to win in romance. Back in New York, Grandm?e foils Mia's first important date with Michael by forcing her to attend a ball. Luckily, Michael is too cool, and comes through as valiantly as Mr. Rochester. The diary format lets the reader follow each twist-and-turn from Mia's point of view, with plenty of asides on current media events (which, while fun, will date quickly-readers may already have forgotten what is funny about a "Free Winona Ryder" t-shirt). Cabot's fresh, fast-paced voice catches the new reader up with the important details so that having missed the first three episodes doesn't get in the way of enjoying this one. (Fiction. 11-16) |
