Book Description
Kipper and Tiger plan a picnic which is nearly ruined by a series of disruptions.
Children's Literature
Kipper the puppy continues his adventures with his animal friends on top of Big Hill at a picnic. Everybody seems to have something better to do than eat. Pig and Arnold want to fly a kite, and Tiger wants to go to the pond. To make things even worse for poor Kipper, the ants and the wasps arrive, trying to eat everyone's sandwiches. Finally, an unexpected treat presents itself to the animals, and the picnic fiasco turns around and soon has everyone smiling. 2001, Red Wagon Books/Harcourt, $4.95. Ages 2 to 5. Reviewer: Catherine Campbell Wright
School Library Journal
Cuddly Kipper pairs with another canine friend, Tiger, for challenges leading to happy endings in both of these trim tales. In Picnic, the pals encounter rowdy pigs, hungry ants, and wasps before finally settling on an all-apple lunch. The scenes for Thing! are more interesting and humorous, although enterprising readers may be disappointed if they try to reenact the activities. In both stories, loose ends are neatly tied up. Inkpen's language and rhythm sometimes mimic A. A. Milne, attaining a quaint tempo. The illustrations are precious as always, with rounded cartoon figures that always appear to be on the verge of smiling. |
