19세기초, 여성들에게 교육의 기회가 제공되지 않았던 시절에 이례적으로 식물학 분야에서 놀라운 업적을 이룩한 "안나 앳킨스"의 일대기를 다룬 그림책입니다.

안나 앳킨스는 지금부터 약 220여년 전인 1799년에 영국에서 태어났습니다. 엄마는 출산 직후 사망을 하는 바람에 안나는 당시 유명한 화학자이자 곤충학자였던 아버지 존 조지 칠드런과 함께 살았습니다. 당시에는 여성들에게는 교육의 기회가 거의 주어지지 않았지만, 아버지는 안나에게 화학, 물리학, 동물학, 식물학, 생물학 등 과학의 거의 모든 분야에 대해 열성적으로 가르쳤습니다.

안나 앳킨스는 아버지의 사랑스러운 딸인 동시에 연구에 있어서는 동반자이기도 했습니다. 식물들에 대해서 특히 관심이 많았던 안나는 수집한 꽃들을 테이블 위에 펼쳐놓고 자세히 관찰했습니다. 그리고 바닷가에서는 수많은 종류의 해초들과 조개껍질들을 수집하고 자신이 수집한 것들을 노트에 자세히 그렸습니다.

25살에 안나는 런던시장의 아들인 존 켈리 앳킨스와 결혼했으며, 아버지는 대영박물관의 자연사 파트에서 근무했습니다. 이때 설립된 영국의 왕립학회는 당대 최고의 과학자들이 모여서 토론도 하고 정보교환도 하던 곳인데, 여성들은 참여할 수 없었기 때문에, 아버지는 중요한 강의내용들을 안나에게 얘기해 줬으며, 왕립학회에서 발표된 논문들도 안나에게 건네줬습니다.

안나는 자신이 수집한 수천종의 식물표본과 약 1,500종의 해초 표본들을 압착하고 건조시켜서 영구적으로 보관할 수 있도록 만들고, 이들을 한군데 모은 식물표본관을 세웠습니다. 안나는 식물학 분야에서 놀라운 연구업적을 쌓게 되고, 마침내 1839년에 영국 왕립학회의 멤버쉽을 받게 됩니다.이것은 그 당시 시대상황으로 볼 때 여성으로서는 매우 위대한 성취였습니다.

그리고 당시에 사진이라는 새로운 발명품이 선보였는데, 안나와 아버지는 사진의 매력에 푹 빠지게 되었습니다. 아버지는 안나에게 사진기를 선물했는데, 덕분에 안나 앳킨스는 최초의 여성사진작가로 역사에 기록되기도 합니다.

그러던 중 안나 앳킨스는 지인 중 한 명인 존 허셸이 일종의 사진 기법인 '시아노타입'을 발명하자 이를 배우게 됩니다. "시아노타입"은 특정 화학 물질을 바른 종이 등에 물체를 올려놓고 햇빛에 노출하면 물체를 올려놓은 부분을 제외한 나머지 부분은 파란색으로 변하게 되며, 변하지 않는 물체 모양의 부분을 얻게 되는 방법입니다. 안나 앳킨스는 이 기술이 발명된 다음해인 1843년 시아노타입을 이용해 해조류의 모습을 기록한 '영국의 해조류(Photographs of British Algae)'를 발간하게 됩니다. 이 책은 최초의 사진집으로 여겨지고 있으며, 이 때문에 안나 앳킨스가 최초의 여성 사진가라고 여기는 이들도 많습니다.

안나는 1843년에서 1853년까지 10년에 걸쳐 "시아노타입" 방식의 사진들을 이용한 식물도감 12부작을 편찬했으며, 이 책들은 과학적인 가치 뿐만 아니라, 푸르른 색깔의 신비로운 사진들이 높은 예술적 가치를 인정받아 2004년도에는 경매에서 22만 9250파운드(한화로 약 3억 8500만원)에 거래되기도 했습니다.

이 책 "The Bluest of Blues"에는 안나의 사진작품들이 다수 수록되어 있어서 그녀의 작품들이 지닌 예술성을 감상할 수 있는 기회를 제공합니다.

After losing her mother very early in life, Anna Atkins (1799-1871) was raised by her loving father. He gave her a scientific education, which was highly unusual for women and girls in the early 19th century. Fascinated with the plant life around her, Anna became a botanist. She recorded all her findings in detailed illustrations and engravings, until the invention of cyanotype photography in 1842. Anna used this new technology in order to catalogue plant specimens-a true marriage of science and art. In 1843, Anna published the book Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions with handwritten text and cyanotype photographs. It is considered the first book of photographs ever published. Atkins became an avid collector of specimens from the natural world, shells and ferns and flowers among them, and learned to illustrate them with remarkable accuracy. When she was introduced to the new science of photography and cyanotypes (aka sun prints), Atkins's inspiration reached a peak and she began to catalog and photograph her enormous collection. Robinson's picture book biography is a loving tribute to this remarkable woman whose impressive contributions were recognized long after her passing. Openly acknowledging in the author's note that Atkins's childhood was lost to history, the author fills in the gaps with imagined scenes of her youth-somewhat of a misstep in an otherwise winsome work. Robinson's writing has an ethereal quality to it. The beautiful blues of the pencil drawings, watercolor washes, and original cyanotypes from Atkins's collection come together on each page as an immersive experience, creating an array of blue that limns Atkins's world. VERDICT A pleasing addition to most collections. Have readers enjoy independently or perhaps with sun print paper so that they can try their hand at cyanotype making.
