Children's Literature
Witt has created a nonfiction guide to in-line skating that is clearly presented and peppered with humorous illustrations by Evans. Kids and parents learn the basics—the gear, how to begin skating and, most importantly, how to stop without causing severe injury to oneself. As the book says—balance is key and when learning to skate, there will probably be many falls—hence the need for knee and elbow pads and a helmet. To succeed, young skaters need to get up and keep trying, because in-line skating when mastered is great fun and terrific exercise. 2000, Aladdin, and $3.99. Ages 6 up. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot

From School Library Journal
A beginning reader with engaging text and humor. The light, lively tone makes learning to in-line skate fun. Safety measures and equipment are emphasized without being preachy. The colorful cartoons depict multiracial boys and girls of varying athletic abilities. The unique close-ups and unusual perspectives add interest. The only drawback is a rather uneven style due to the occasional rhyming text. Nevertheless, this title will help beginners learn the basics of the sport.
