Small human figures make occasional comic appearances in the pictures, but this handsome slim volume is an informative introduction to the life of "the biggest creature that has ever lived on Earth." In an effective opening double-page scene, a young man and woman reach up toward an elephant and a giraffe, all of them standing next to the tail end of the whale, demonstrating its enormous size. Davies offers simple, lively descriptions of the blue whale's body, eating habits, child care, migration, and means of communication. "Yet, the blue whale may not be as lonely as it seems. Because sometimes it makes a huma hum so loud and so low that it can travel for thousands of miles through the seas to reach other blue whales." Maland's cross-hatched pen-and-ink drawings, washed in soft tones of blue, gray, aqua, and orange, sometimes appear as smaller, blocked scenes, but more often they fill the double-page spreads with bits of caption gracefully curving around related picture elements. Invoking the senses, Davies describes the blue whale's physical attributes in irresistible, crystalline terms. Its skin is "springy and smooth like a hard-boiled egg, and it's as slippery as wet soap." The enormity of the blue whale comes into focus in the illustrations that place it next to a giraffe and an elephant, bringing it into the everyday realm of children. The scale of this leviathan becomes even clearer when Davies notes that its eyes are the size of teacups and its ears are no larger than the end of a pencil. She covers its yearly migration, and its diet of 30 million tiny krill in just a day. Undulating bold text provides auxiliary facts that complement the main story. Effective use of shrinking and expanding typeface and the inclusion of two human observers accentuate the proportional vastness of both the creature and its ocean. This unassuming book is teeming with new discoveries upon each rereading. |

Read and wonder 시리즈를 읽다보면 저절로 자연과 동물에 대한 소중함과 사랑이 생겨날 듯한 느낌이 들지요. 총천연색의 사진과 무미건조한 설명이 아니라, 마치 고래 옆에 앉아서 그린 듯한 그림과

과 같은 문장을 보면 요 시리즈를 좋아하지 않을 수가 없지요. 잠시 인용한 문장만 보아도 아이들이 이해하기 쉽게 주변의 사물들을 이용해서 고래를 설명한 것을 느낄 수 있을 거예요.^^

 고래관련 책이 많지만.. |
집에 고래관련 책이 적어도 3권 이상은 되는 것 같아요.
엄마 욕심에 과학/자연관찰류 책들은 내용상 크게 차이가 없음에도
조금만 달라보여도 일단 구매하게 되더군요.
게다가 우연찮게 한 권, 두 권 모으게 된..
집에 고래관련 책이 적어도 3권 이상은 되는 것 같아요.
엄마 욕심에 과학/자연관찰류 책들은 내용상 크게 차이가 없음에도
조금만 달라보여도 일단 구매하게 되더군요.
게다가 우연찮게 한 권, 두 권 모으게 된 Read and Wonder시리즈 책이니 일단 접수해야죠.^^
여기서는 우리가 흔히 whale이라고 부르는 일반 고래와는 또 다른
blue whale(청고래)에 대한 다양한 정보들이 소개됩니다.
색감이 화려하거나 이쁜건 아니지만 섬세한 그림과 함께 청고래의 모양에서 습성에 대해
알 수 있는 책이라 초등 저학년 정도라면 한 권 구비해 보여주면 좋아요.

이 책 read and wonder 시리즈에 포함된 책 아닌가요? 출판사만 같은 건지.. 예전에 그 시리즈 여러 권 구입할 때 같이 본 것 같아요. 시리즈의 다른 책들에 비해 아이가 관심을 덜 가지고, 그리고 다른 책들보다 어려워 보여 구입하진 않았는데 역시 그림은 아주 아름답고 참 좋았습니다. 실사 못지 않은 좋은 그림들입니다. 내용으로 blue whale 의 생태와 습성들을 보여주는 책입니다. 고래에 관한 책이 많이 나와 있지만 이런 그림책의 스타일로 보여주는 것도 괜찮을 것 같습니다.
