이 책은 박쥐의 생태와 습성에 대하여 세밀하고 아름다운 사실화 그림을 이용해서 흥미진진하게 보여줍니다. 어둠이 내리면 잠에서 깨어나는 박쥐는 먹이를 찾기 위해 어두운 하늘로 날아 오릅니다. 박쥐의 넓은 날개는 팔과 길다란 손가락, 그리고 손가락 사이의 얇은 피부로 이루어져 있습니다. 그리고 발가락은 갈퀴 모양으로 되어 있어서 거꾸로 매달려 있기가 쉽습니다. 어둠 속에서 박쥐는 눈보다는 소리를 이용해서 방향을 잡고 사물을 인식합니다. 사람 귀에는 들리지 않지만 햄머를 내리치는 소리보다도 더 큰 초음파 소리를 낸 후 소리가 부딪혀 반사되어 오는 것을 감지해 냅니다. 대부분의 박쥐는 하루밤에 수십마리의 벌레들을 잡아 먹습니다만, 과일, 물고기, 개구리, 피 등을 먹이로 하는 박쥐도 있습니다. 밤이 지나고 여명이 밝아오면, 박쥐는 은신처로 돌아와서 기다리고 있는 새끼에게 젖을 먹입니다. 그리고 깊은 잠에 빠져듭니다. 박쥐는 밤을 좋아하는 야행성 동물입니다.

Bat (a pipistrelle) wakes up, flies out into the night to eat, and returns home to feed her young. The narrative, in large type, gives much of the information about bats in a voice that can work as a read-aloud ("Gliding and fluttering back and forth, she shouts her torch of sound among the trees, listening for her supper"), while smaller type on some pages elaborates ("Using sound to find your way like this is called echolocation"). The watercolor-and-pencil illustrations, in browns and blues, hint of night, without being too dark. Close-up views of plants and animals show detail, while wider sweeping landscapes give context and a sense of space. The details of Bat's fur and face do justice to this mammal, which many young kids may still think of as "gross." This is useful as a very first introduction to bats, but readers will need to go farther to answer some questions (like what kinds of bats do eat "fruit, fish, frogs, even blood!"). And while there is an index of 15 terms, there is no bibliography. Nevertheless, this is a beautifully designed and thoughtfully executed informational storybook. |

보여주면 좋을 것 같네요.

그림이 너무 아름다워서 하나씩 모으고 있는 시리즈랍니다.
박쥐에 관한 책은 드문데요..애들이 박쥐를 너무 좋아해요..
흔한 동물도 아니지만,,,배트맨이나 흡혈귀를 통해서 책에서 자주 봐서 그런거같아요..

박쥐는 새일까? 포유류일까? 물었더니 포유류라고 잘 알고 있더라구요..
옛날 얘기에도 그런 얘기가 있어서 알고 있나봐요..
특히나 동물을 보면 뭘 먹는지 궁금해하는데 그런 얘기도 잘 나와있어요

Read and Wonder 시리즈는 아직 아이 연령보다 어려운데요, 앞으로 잘 챙겨 볼 아이를 위해, 그리고 책 내용이 워낙 좋아 하프에 올라 올 때마다 열심히 구입하고 있어요.

서정적인 동화 한편을 본 듯한 아름다운 그림이 인상적이고요, 그러면서도 자연관찰이 가져야 할 정보전달에도 충실한 책입니다. 박쥐의 생태에 대해 자세하게 서술하면서도 영어표현이 아이들 보기에 그리 어렵지 않은 점도 맘에 드는 점이에요.
