고양이 랄프는 블루베리 케이크를 만들고 있습니다. 사라는 옆에서 부엌을 더럽히지 말라고 하고 있네요. 하지만 랄프는 크림 스프레이로 엉망진창으로 만들어 놓고 맙니다.

For a few heart-stopping moments it seems so: although Ralph steadfastly resists the school's more conventional blandishments, he slips into a docile trance when Mr. Fred swings a watch back and forth before his eyes. His owner, Sarah, appalled by his impeccable but utterly bland demeanor, soon finds herself doing the unthinkable: luring Ralph into devilment by any means at hand. Depicting an inspired contest of wills between the normally notorious Ralph and his newly naughty taskmaster, this effort brims with Gantos and Rubel's characteristically and irresistibly funny details: Mr. Fred's ``golden rules'' prohibit meowing, hissing, burping and fun (Ralph makes a paper airplane of his copy); the pupils are admonished to keep their paws to themselves in a ``self-control room'' filled with enticingly fragile objects. Rubel's electrically colored, eccentrically patterned illustrations are as exuberant as ever: particularly rousing is Ralph's spiral-eyed, hypnotically vacant gaze. PreS-Gr 2-Rotten Ralph is such a mean cat that his young mistress tires of his mischievous ways and sends him to Mr. Fred's Feline Finishing School. There, he remains rotten until he is put in the ``final finishing room,'' where Mr. Fred hypnotizes the students so that they believe they are good. Sarah takes Ralph home and rewards him with a celebration; when he responds by falling asleep, she tries to restore him to his former self. She eats a goldfish, climbs the curtains, and more until Ralph remembers ``how good it felt to be rotten.'' Each full-page picture balances a page of text. The cartoon illustrations, with bold colors and graphic designs, are filled with small details that children will love. The text is comprised of simple, declarative sentences and lacks the humor of the pictures. Ralph's transformation is unconvincingly accomplished, but Sarah's change of heart is even less so. At the beginning she is frustrated by Ralph's behavior-her expressions register open-mouthed, wide-eyed shock. Her pet does not seem to endear himself to her in any way. Readers may well be perplexed when she sighs, "`I'm glad my Rotten Ralph is back.'" This is likely to appeal only to fans of the previous books.-Cynthia K. Richey, Mt. Sarah, at her wit's end with her cat Ralph's rottenness, decides to send him to Mr. Fred's Feline Finishing School. By the time Ralph has finished the class, he is more zombie than cat. So, Sarah must find a way to help return Ralph to his normal rotten self. The story is enhanced with original music and sound effects. Side one includes page-turn signals (a "meow"), while side two features uninterrupted narration. Youngsters will enjoy listening to Ralph's escapades while looking at the book's detailed cartoon illustrations by Nicole Rubel. Ralph is not a good cat, but he gets away with it because his owner, Sarah, loves him just the way he is. Gantos reads with just the right mischievous tone, so that despite Ralph's rotten behavior, you can't help but feel sorry for him when he thinks his birthday party's been cancelled, or root for him to return to his rotten old ways after being reformed by Mr. Fred's Feline Finishing School. Touches like playful and ever-so-slightly devilish Klezmer-inspired back-ground music, cat's meow page-turn signals, and sound effects that punctuate Ralph's antics add to the charm. Author and illustrator Nicole Rubel has a degree in fine arts from the Boston Museum School and has taught ceramics, silk screening, and mural design to children. Booklist has described her artwork as "busy, brightly colored paintings, done in child appealing primitive style, filled with subtle, humorous touches." Ms. lives in West Linn, Oregon, with her husband and parrot. Jack Gantos lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Jack Gantos: "While I was in college, I began writing stories about animals. When I first met Nicole Rubel she was a painting student... We had a friend who thought we had a similar sense of humor. So we teamed up and began working together on picture books ... At first I thought children's books had to be sweet, warm, and gentle ... After [several] failures, I was very frustrated. Then I remembered what one of my teacheers told me. He said, 'You should write about what you know:' I was sitting at my desk and I looked down on the floor and saw my lousy, grumpy, hissing creep of a cat that loved to scratch my ankles, throw fur around the house, and shred the clothes in my closet. So I wrote the first draft of Rotten Ralph." |
