Book Description
A young boy and girl compare the things they like in this board book, though they may experience them in different ways. "I like my cat," says the girl, as a tiny calico kitten walks across her hair; "I like my cat too," echoes the boy, though he seems to be riding a full-sized (if toylike) tiger. In the last pages we see the boy and girl both love their mother—it turns out they are siblings—and then ask young readers what they like and love. In his unusual illustration technique, Michael Grejniec paints small, simple pictures on heavily textured watercolor paper and then enlarges them two-and-a-half times to enhance the grain even further, so that the little bumps, wiggles, and blobs in the art that are usually too tiny to notice become part of the picture. This book for readers up to 6 features gentle children who encounter the world with wonder and joy.

Unusually well-conceived illustrations add luster to this simple but stimulating picture book. Hand-lettered text conveys a dialogue between a girl, who announces "I like rainbows, my cat, music, etc." on one spread, and a boy, who on the following spread responds, "I like rainbows, etc., too." Pictures suggest that each choice carries a range of imaginative possibilities--the girl stands under a rainbow, the boy pictures himself climbing one; for music, the girl plays a grand piano as kaleidoscopic birds soar overhead, the boy is shown turbaned and in the process of charming a snake. The real spur to the imagination comes from the artwork, executed in watercolors on Colombe paper, with images magnified 250%. The effect is of a magical texture with perfectly saturated colors, certain to elicit awe. The rainbow of hues here delights the eye.

Flip through this book just once and it's easy to question its purpose. Flip through it again and instead be caught up by the infinite number of possible interpretations of simple declarative statements, such as "I like music," or "I like to fly." Dual visual responses are given to six different statements, alternating between a girl and a boy. For instance, the girl is shown jumping rope as the text reads, "I like to play." Turn the page and the boy throws boomerangs across the double-page spread and replies, "I like to play, too." Progressing from what they like to a single statement of love, it becomes evident that these two children have the same mother. The book ends by asking readers what they like and love. The watercolor illustrations are unusual in that they show the bumpy texture of the paper on which they've been painted. This, coupled with immediate images and bright colors, draws readers into each fanciful scene. This book might stimulate children into creating their own comparable catalog of likes. |
