1725년, 서아프리카 말리지역. 백인들이 침략해서 흑인들을 무자비하게 노예로 잡아가던 시절. 뛰어난 대장장이 딩가는 결혼한지 1년밖에 안된 아내가 아이를 출산하다 목숨을 잃게 되는 큰 슬픔을 겪게 됩니다. 딩가는 아내가 남겨준 아들을 혼자서 잘 키우겠다고 다짐하지요. 그리고 아들의 이름을 "하늘 아래 가장 위대한 자"라는 의미를 지니고 있는 무사파로 짓습니다. 아빠 딩가의 지극한 정성과 사랑 속에서 무사파는 바람을 가르며 초원을 달리는 것을 좋아하는 건강하고 총명한 아이로 자랍니다. 그리고 아빠로부터 훌륭한 대장장이가 되기 위한 교육과 훈련을 받습니다. 그런데 어느날 무사파를 인근 덤불숲으로 보내서 땔감을 주어오라고 시켰는데 시간이 지나고 해가 지도록 무사파가 돌아오지 않았습니다. 아빠는 마을 사람들을 불러모아서 함께 무사파를 찾아 나섰습니다만, 흔적조차 발견할 수가 없었습니다.
무사파는 코끼리떼에 밟혀서 죽은 걸까요? 아니면 사자에게 잡혀 먹힌 걸까요?
그런데 아빠는 무사파가 노예사냥꾼에게 잡혀서 발목에 사슬이 채워진 채 끌려갔다는 소식을 듣게 됩니다. 아빠는 무사파를 무사히 구해낼 수 있을까요? 아빠 딩가와 아들 무사파는 다시 재회해서 함께 살 수 있을까요?
총 21개 짧은 스토리로 이루어져 있으며, 각각의 스토리가 앞뒤로 이어지면서 한 편의 이야기를 완성시키는 구성입니다.
모든 문장들은 간결하고 정제된 시어로 쓰여졌으며, 감상할만한 가치가 있는 딜론부부의 그림들은 한결같이 눈부시게 아름답습니다.
