아이들은 눈 위에 찍혀 있는 동물들의 발자국들을 관찰하기도 하고, 자신의 발자국을 남기는가 하면, 긴 썰매자국을 남기기도 합니다. 눈사람과 눈요새를 만들기도 하고, 모두 눈 위에 누워서 두팔과 다리를 움직여서 천사 마크를 만들기도 합니다.

하지만 눈은 영원히 남아 있지는 않지요. 조용히 햇빛을 받으며 녹기 시작하면 녹은 물들이 조잘조잘 소리내며 흐르는 개울을 채우고, 이물이 흘르고 흘러서 폭포를 만들기도 합니다.

이제 눈이 쌓여 있던 땅 위에는 아름다운 꽃들이 가득 덮여 있고, 아이들은 활짝 핀 꽃들을 보며 눈꽃송이를 기억합니다...

이 책은 작가 스티븐 켈로그가 살고 있던 Sandy Hook 지역의 초등학교에서 2012년 12월에 발생했던 비극적인 무차별 총격사건으로 인해 큰 충격을 받았던 어린 아이들과 그 가족들에게 희망을 주기 위해 만들었다고 합니다. 눈이 내리고, 녹고, 개울을 만들고, 꽃을 피우는 자연의 사이클을 통해 우리 삶의 사이클에서도 아름다움, 즐거움, 그리고 슬픔이 모두 녹아 있다는 깨달음을 주며, 이 책의 아름다운 그림과 글을 통해 자연과 마찬가지로 우리도 언제나 다시 새롭게 될 수 있다는 것을 보여줍니다.
