작은 골짜기 농장의 농부가 등장하면서부터 책은 시작됩니다. 농부가 아내를 데려오고, 농부의 아내는 아이를, 아이는 간호사를, 간호사는 개를, 개는 고양이를 데려옵니다. 고양이는 생쥐를, 생쥐는 어디선가 치즈를 가져오지요. 이렇게 해서 농부의 농장 식구들이 점차 늘어납니다.

농부가 아내를 데려온다는 내용의 그림에는 여러 부인들의 모습이 그려져 있는데, 그 중에 농부의 아내가 속해있고 그 다음 장을 넘기면 어떤 부인이 농부의 아내인지 그 모습에 구멍이 뚫려있어 쉽게 구분할 수 있습니다. 이 책도 다른 책들과 마찬가지로 왼쪽 페이지에는 노래 가사가, 오른쪽 페이지에는 내용에 맞추어 그림이 그려져 있는데, 간간히 등장하는 농장의 동물 친구들이 말하는 지문 또한 재미있습니다. 그 외에 아이, 간호사, 개, 고양이 등의 그림들에도 구멍이 나있어 점점 늘어나는 농장 식구들이 누구인지를 알려줍니다.

Teachers often bemoan the loss of interest in nursery rhymes because they have traditionally been one of the earliest listening and learning experiences for children.
