파리의 기숙 유아원에서 생활하는 12명의 소녀중 가장 키가 작고 말썽꾸러기인 마들린느는 어느날 밤 심한 복통을 일으킵니다. 급히 병원으로 옮겨져서 맹장염 수술을 받고 입원을 하게 되지요. 어느 날 유아원의 친구들이 병문안을 왔다가 병실에 예쁜 꽃, 장난감, 캔디, 인형집 등이 가득한 것을 보고 마들린느를 부러워 하게 됩니다. 특히 아이들의 눈을 둥그렇게 만든 것은 마들린느가 자랑스럽게 보여준 배의 수술자국 흉터였어요. 아이들은 자기한테 없는 것을 남이 갖고 있으면 무척 부러워 하죠. 그날밤 유아원으로 돌아온 아이들은 한 밤에 자다가 일어나서는 일제히 울음을 터트립니다. 자기들도 맹장염 수술을 받고 싶다고...
모든 문장들은 운율이 들어맞는 Rhyme으로 되어 있어서 어린 독자들이 큰 소리로 따라 읽기에 좋습니다.
