Kate Greenaway 수상작가이자, We're going on a bear hunt를 비롯한 수많은 어린이 명작 그림책의 작가인 Helen Oxenbury의 사랑스러운 그림을 감상할 수 있는 책입니다. 영국에서 처음 출간된 후 세계 각국의 10개 언어로 번역서가 출간되었으며, 우리나라에서는 "나는 용감한 잭 임금님"이라는 제목으로 번역서가 출간된 명작 그림책입니다.
아이들은 놀이를 하며 자랍니다. 뛰어놀고, 어울려 놀고, 상상하면서 노는 아이들은 몸과 마음이 건강하게 자라지요. 이 책의 주인공인 잭도 딱 그런 아이들 중 한 명입니다. 잭은 자크와 캐스퍼, 두 동생을 데리고 큼직한 종이 상자와 낡은 이불보, 막대기 등으로 자기들만의 성을 만듭니다. 그리고 용과 괴물들을 무찌르는 놀이를 벌이지요.
해가 저물어 자크와 캐스퍼가 귀가한 후에도 잭은 홀로 성을 지킵니다. 하지만 휘잉 불어오는 바람과 후들후들 떨리는 나무, 점점 어두워지는 하늘때문에 잭은 점점 무서워져 버렸어요. '쿵쿵' 그 때 갑자기 무시무시한 발소리가 들려요. 잭은 두려움에 휩싸입니다. 이 위기상황을 잭은 어떻게 극복할 수 있을까요?
