Hondo and Fabian으로 Caldecott상을 수상한 Peter McCarty의 유머러스한 그림책입니다. 국내에서는 "나는 티라노사우르스"라는 제목으로 번역서가 출간되었습니다.
육식공룡 티라노사우루스는 줄여서 티라노 또는 티렉스라고도 불립니다. 티라노는 모든 공룡 중에서 가장 포악하고 무시무시한 공룡으로 알려져 있습니다. 하지만 이 책에서는 티라노가 주인공으로 등장해서 자신들이 그렇게 인식되어지는 것은 억울하고 부당하다고 주장하네요.
몸집이 크다보니 걸을 때 어쩔 수 없이 꽃들을 밟을 수 밖에 없으며, 달릴 때는 땅이 쿵쿵 울리다 보니 다른 공룡들이 무서워서 도망을 간다고 합니다. 태어날 때는 다른 동물들과 마찬가지로 알을 깨고 나오며, 엄마가 있는 평범한 동물이었다네요. 하지만 나이가 들수록 몸집이 거대하게 자라다보니 항상 배가 고플 수 밖에 없으며, 태어날 때부터 식물을 먹지 못하고 고기를 먹어야만 하는 육식 공룡의 운명을 지니고 있기 때문에 어쩔 수 없이 다른 공룡들을 잡아먹게 된 것이라고 주장합니다...
유머를 느낄 수 있는 간결한 문장과 Peter McCarty 특유의 색연필을 이용해서 그린 부드러운 벨벳풍의 그림이 멋진 조화를 이루는 책입니다.

This picture book begins, "I am Tyrannosaurus Rex. I am a dinosaur, otherwise known as a terrible lizard." The creature continues to reflect on its own identity: "I do not know why I am so terrible." As the carnivore frightens other dinosaurs away, it wonders, "Would I be so terrible if I were pink?" In the end, it concludes: "I am Tyrannosaurus Rex… I cannot help that I am so terrible." Muted pencil-on-watercolor-paper drawings delineate a toothy but not too ferocious-looking beast with short front legs and a bemused expression (until the very end when it chases its dinner). Filled with textured lines and soft shading, the artwork glows with warmth and vitality. This beautifully formatted and well-conceived offering has creamy ivory pages that frame the subtle illustrations and spare text. It has just a hint of scariness, with a bit of humor thrown in - exactly right for the youngest dinosaur fans. A small book, but one that should be very welcome in storytimes
