A young boy swings in his backyard and imagines all of the places he might fly and all of the exciting things he might do along the way. "I like to loop the loop and power dive and hover and soar, or shoot from a boat with an ear-blasting roar." Near the end of his adventures, the little boy flies to where he wants to go most of all - outer space "where stars twinkle in the sky" and where Mom is hard at work in the space station. Mission accomplished, he jumps off his swing, returns to Earth and runs into Mom's arms. Young children will be reassured that even the most adventurous of aviators will be welcomed home with open arms. Lively and colorful pictures illustrate each page of brief text. And the front and back endpapers are covered with planes of all sorts - from biplanes whose "two wings make it easy to maneuver" when used for "acrobatics and crop spraying" to helicopters which "like dragonflies, can fly up and down, or backwards" and sometimes just hover. A book for any young child who loves planes!

After folding and flying a paper airplane, a boy dreams about ways of traveling aloft, such as balloons, blimps, and spaceships. Down on Earth, readers see him soaring on a swing and being twirled around in the air by his mother. Children will enjoy the bold colors and simple text in this third outing from Sturges and Halpern. They will particularly enjoy finding out that the child's mother is an astronaut. Bright endpapers show a range of flying machines with a little bit of information about each of them. Preschool storyhours will soar with this book. Pair it with Douglas Florian's Airplane Ride (HarperCollins, 1984) and Donald Crews's Flying (Morrow, 1989). A great choice for most collections. |
