낙엽이 수북이 쌓여 있는 깊은 숲 속. 동물 친구들에게 재미있는 이야기를 들려주고 싶은 곰이 한 마리 있습니다. 하지만 겨울이 다가오는 늦은 가을에는 친구들끼리 이야기를 나누는 일이 쉽지 않습니다. 동물들은 겨울을 맞은 준비들을 하느라 여념이 없기 때문이지요. 쥐는 씨앗을 모아야 하고, 오리는 남쪽 나라로 날아가야 하고, 개구리는 따뜻한 잠자리를 찾아야 합니다. 친구들을 찾아간 곰은 이야기를 해주기는커녕 겨울 준비를 도와주느라 덩달아 바빠집니다. 어느새 겨울의 첫 눈송이가 흩날리기 시작하고, 곰도 겨울잠에 들어야 합니다. 이렇게 모든 숲 속 동물들이 각자의 겨울을 맞았습니다. 몇 달이 지나면 햇살 좋은 봄이 찾아오겠지요. 그런데 봄이 오면, 과연 곰은 친구들에게 하고 싶었던 이야기를 들려줄 수 있을까요?

이 책에서는 그동안 봐오던 크고 무서운 곰이 아닌, 착하고 심성 고운 곰이 등장합니다. 자기보다 훨씬 작은 동물들의 이야기를 듣기 위해 기꺼이 몸을 숙이는 곰은 마치 우리의 친구처럼 아주 친근감 있게 다가옵니다. 도대체 무슨 이야기를 해주고 싶은 건지, 친구들을 찾아가 이야기를 들어달라고 말하는 모습이 엉뚱하게도 느껴집니다.

착한 곰은 친구들이 자신의 이야기에 귀 기울여 주지 않는 것에 서운해하지 않습니다. 오히려 겨울 준비로 바쁜 친구들의 사정을 다 이해해 주고 따뜻한 마음씨로 친구들을 도와줍니다. 겨울이 끝난 후, 친구들도 곰이 베푼 정성을 잊지 않습니다. 곰의 이야기를 듣기 위해 한자리에 모인 친구들은 아마 곰을 아주 기쁘게 해주었을 겁니다. 짤막한 이야기 속에서도 동물들의 깊은 배려와 우정을 따뜻하게 묘사하며 어린이 독자들의 마음속에 잔잔한 감동을 선사합니다.

아울러 에린 E. 스테드의 그림은 연필화 위에 물감으로 색채를 입혀서 섬세하고 서정적인 느낌을 주며, 계절에 어울리는 따뜻한 색감이 숲과 자연의 흐름을 아름답게 보여 줍니다. 많은 색깔을 쓰지 않고, 여백을 굳이 채우려 하지 않는 여유로운 솜씨가 긴 여운을 남깁니다.

It was almost winter and Bear was getting sleepy.
But first, Bear had a story to tell...
Bear found his friend Mouse, but Mouse was busy gathering seeds and didn't have time to listen to a story. Then Bear saw his friend Duck, but Duck was getting ready to fly south. What about his friend Toad? He was busy looking for a warm place to sleep. By the time Bear was through helping his friends get ready for winter, would anyone still be awake to hear his story?
This endearing story of friendship and patience is a worthy companion to Philip and Erin Stead's last collaboration, A Sick Day for Amos McGee, winner of the 2011 Caldecott Medal.

Before hunkering down to hibernate, Bear wants to share a story with his friends, but Mouse, Duck, Frog, and Mole are too busy with their own winter preparations to listen. Months later, Bear wakes up and is eager to reunite with his pals and finally tell his tale. He "clear[s] his throat," "puff[s] out his chest," and then, much to his chagrin, forgets what he wants to say. His friends offer prompts that jog his memory: "Maybe your story is about a bear," "Maybe your story is about the busy time just before winter," "there should be other characters too." In lovely circular fashion, the ending has Bear sitting on a log beginning his story that readers will remember as the first sentence of the book. Erin Stead's exquisite pencil and watercolor illustrations capture the beauty of the changing landscape with falling leaves, first snowflakes, and starry evenings. Bear's nurturing acts of kindness are also conveyed, from raising a paw to check the wind direction as Duck flies away to gently tucking Frog under a warm blanket of leaves and pine needles. The rhythms of nature and of storytelling are in fine form here.
