This book is one in the series called "Brand New Readers." "Brand New Readers" are short, funny stories with words and pictures that help children reading for the first time succeed and have fun. The book begins with an introduction to parents explaining how to use the "Brand New Reader." Based on what experts know about learning to read, "Brand New Readers" encourage parents to read the introduction to the child aloud and to look at the pictures throughout the book. Then the parents are instructed to read the first page aloud, placing their finger under each word. Next the parents are told to allow their child to read the rest of the story, giving them time to figure out each word. If the child becomes stuck on a word the parents are given suggestions on ways to help the child work through the story. The parents are encouraged to praise the child often and to give the child many chances to read the story again and again. In the story, Mouse tries different outdoor activities depending on the season. Mouse swims, fishes, camps, and makes a snowman.
