영국에서 해마다 가장 우수한 어린이 그림책 작가에게 수여되는 Kate Greenaway상을 두차례 수상한 Helen Cooper의 또 다른 대표작입니다.
어느날 윌리엄은 계단을 올라가다가 계단 밑 창고방에 커다란 곰이 있는 것을 보았어요. 만일 무시무시한 곰이 배가 고프면 자기를 잡아먹지 않을까 걱정이 들기 시작했지요. 윌리엄은 곰이 배고프지 않도록 창고문을 쌀짝 열고 음식을 던저 주었어요. 배, 바나나, 베이컨, 꿀, 빵, 헤이즐넛, 생선.. 날이 지남에 따라 집안에 퀴퀴한 냄새가 퍼지기 시작하자 엄마는 냄새의 진원지인 창고문을 열려고 했어요. 하지만 윌리엄은 겁에 질려 엄마를 가로 막았지요. 윌리엄의 이야기를 다 듣고 난 후 엄마는 윌리엄에게 함께 힘을 합쳐 곰을 잡자고 했지요. 용감하게 창고문을 열자 그 안에 있었던 것은... 다 썩어가는 음식물들과 털이 북실북실한 양탄자를 뒤집어 쓰고 있는 낡은 의자였어요.

표지가 두꺼운 판지나 보드지가 아닌 비교적 얇은 종이를 사용해서 만든 책이며, 실박음질 대신에 풀로 제본처리하는 경우가 많습니다. 일반적으로 하드커버나 보드북에 비해서 가격이 저렴합니다. 소프트커버로 불리우기도 합니다. 책의 이음새 부분이 접히거나 휘는 내구성이 그리 좋지는 않은 책입니다.

This monster-in-a-closet is a daytime fear: William's grizzly invades his imagination when he spies something dark behind the door in the big, shadowy hall. As pictured, the bear is dauntingly large but not entirely fierce; pre-text takes show him arriving by bus, with luggage, an umbrella, and a mischievous glint in his eye. Still, he lurks in corners and under tables, so William finds it prudent to feed him; with eyes shut tight, he tosses offerings under the stairs until the smell alerts his parents and William explains; then he and Mom clean out the closet, shine light on the old chair with a furry rug over it, and shop for a cuddly teddy. Cooper's spare, nicely cadenced text offers a pleasing number of rhyming words (``lair''; ``pear''; etc.); the muted colors and shadowy corners in her perceptive illustrations nicely evoke the elusive boundaries, in a child's mind, between fantasy and reality. Unusually appealing.
