Ben's Trumpet으로 Caldecott상을 수상한 Rachel Isadora의 수채화 그림책입니다. Lili on Stage와 Lili at Ballet에 이어 속편격인 내용입니다. 이번에는 릴리의 시선으로 무대 뒷편의 다양한 모습을 엿볼 수 있습니다.
금요일마다 릴리의 어머니는 발레수업이 끝난 릴리를 데리러 와서 저녁을 먹으러 집으로 갑니다. 하지만 오늘, 릴리는 극장으로 갑니다. "즐거운 시간되거라"라는 엄마의 말을 뒤로 하고 릴리는 무대뒤(Backstage)로 갑니다. 3층에 가서 오케스트라 리허설 스튜디오에 가지만 아무도 없네요. 그래서 2층에 가서 발레 리허설을 잠깐 보지만 오늘은 시간이 별로 없어요. 열려있는 문으로 들어가자 무대위 조명기구들이 달려있는 높은 곳이에요. 릴리는 아래로 내려와서 메이크업방에 들어갑니다. 이곳에서 댄서들은 화장도 하고 분장도 한답니다. 그리고는 모자와 머리 장식 마스크가 있는 가발 룸으로 갑니다. 다시 지나쳐서 의상실로 갑니다. 릴리는 그곳에 있는 어린 학생들을 보고 작년에 "잠자는 숲속의 공주"에서 공연했던 것을 떠올립니다. 다시 매점으로 갑니다. 그곳에는 댄서들이 자유스럽게 이야기를 나누거나 간식도 먹고 숙제를 하고 있는 모습이 보이네요. 그리고 무대 아래있는 곳으로 가는데 아무래도 창고인 모양이에요. 재빨리 위로 올라와서 소품실로 가서 굉장하다며 감탄을 합니다. "공연까지 1시간"이라는 큰 소리를 듣고 서둘러 간 릴리는 바리톤 혼(baritone horn) 연주 소리를 듣습니다. 그리고는 "거기 계셨군요, 할아버지. 찾느라 여기저기 돌아다녔어요. 저녁먹으러 가요. 전 페퍼로니 피자가 먹고 싶어요"라고 이야기합니다(할아버지를 만나려고 여기저기 다녔었던가 봐요). 릴리는 무대 커튼 뒤에서 공연을 지켜보고 공연이 끝나자 다시 할아버지와 만납니다......
발레 공연장의 무대 뒤 여러 곳을 보실 수 있습니다. 악기가 가득한 오케스트라 리허설 스튜디오, 메이크업방(화장법과 여러가지 분장모습을 그린 그림이 나옵니다), 다양한 가발이 진열되어 있는 가발 룸, 의상실, 매점, 소품실, 창고 등 발레 공연장의 이곳저곳을 묘사하고 있는 그림이 실감납니다.

표지가 두꺼운 판지나 보드지가 아닌 비교적 얇은 종이를 사용해서 만든 책이며, 실박음질 대신에 풀로 제본처리하는 경우가 많습니다. 일반적으로 하드커버나 보드북에 비해서 가격이 저렴합니다. 소프트커버로 불리우기도 합니다. 책의 이음새 부분이 접히거나 휘는 내구성이 그리 좋지는 않은 책입니다.

Young balletomanes already know Lili the performer (Lili at Ballet, 1993; Lili on Stage, 1995); this time she leads them through the multileveled labyrinth backstage, from the orchestra rehearsal studio to a balcony view of the stage lights, through the colorful wig and costume rooms and to the spooky recesses under the stage. When she hears a French horn playing, Lili finds the object of her tour—Grandpa Max in the orchestra pit. They share a pepperoni pizza before Lili skedaddles backstage again to watch the performance from the wings. Isadora's finely detailed watercolors capture all the behind-the-scenes bustle: Young dancers stretch and snack in the canteen, another ballerina applies her make-up and transforms herself into a lilac fairy, costumes protrude from a wardrobe in a glorious bouquet of ruffles, and the stage manager—somehow—must change 30 bulbs. Lili is an ideal guide to the world beyond the wings; through her tour, Isadora tacitly makes clear the tremendous work and cooperation that takes place before the first notes of the orchestra are played.
