아이들을 맛있게 잡아먹는 커다란 악어가 코코넛 나무, 놀이터의 시소, 유원지의 회전 목마로 변장해서 아이들을 잡아먹으려고 하지만 악어의 계획은 번번히 빗나갑니다. 욕심 많고 못된 악어가 아이들을 잡아 먹으러 가는 길에 만났던 하마, 코끼리, 원궁이, 새를 괴롭혔는데, 이 동물들이 악어의 계획을 번번히 무산시켜 버리네요. 결국 악어는 아이들을 맛도 보지 못하고 코끼리 때문에 소시지가 되어버리는 운명을 맞게 됩니다...
이 책의 작가인 로알드 달은 ‘에드가 앨런 포’ 상을 두 차례, 전미 미스터리 작가상을 세 차례 수상하였으며 20세기 최고의 이야기꾼 중 한 사람으로 꼽힙니다. 현대 동화에서 "가장 대담하고, 신나고, 뻔뻔스럽고, 재미있는 어린이 책"을 만든 작가라는 평을 받고 있으며, 구미 어린이들이 가장 좋아하는 작가로 손꼽히고 있습니다. 그가 쓴 도서는 국내에서 "마틸다", "찰리와 초콜릿공장", "요술 손가락", "제임스와 슈퍼 복숭아"를 비롯해서 거의 대부분이 번역서로 출간되었습니다.
