에뮤는 호주에 사는 조류의 일종입니다. 날개가 퇴화되어서 날지 못하는 에뮤는 생김새가 타조와 비슷합니다.
동물원에 사는 에뮤인 에드워드는 할 일도 없고, 갈 곳도 없는 하루하루가 따분하고 지겹기만 합니다. 옆 우리에 사는 물개가 물에서 보내는 생활이 가장 멋있어 보이는 에드워드는 담장을 뛰어 넘어가서 물개가 하듯이 물놀이를 하면서 근사한 하루를 보냅니다. 하지만 관람객 중에 한 명이 동물원에서는 사자가 가장 볼만 하다는 말을 하자, 에드워드는 사자 우리로 뛰어 넘어 갔습니다. 사자와 같이 하품도 하고 나뭇가지에 엎드려서 낮잠도 자면서 빈둥빈둥 하루를 보냅니다. 하지만 이번에는 어떤 관람객이 뱀이 가장 멋지다는 말을 하자 에드워드는 뱀 우리로 넘어가서 뱀의 흉내를 내며 하루를 보냅니다. 그런데 이번에는 어떤 관람객이 에뮤가 동물원에서 가장 흥미롭다는 말을 하네요. 그 말에 자신을 돌아보게 된 에뮤는 본래 자기가 살던 에뮤 우리로 돌아가지만 그곳에는 깜짝 놀랄 일이 기다리고 있습니다...
