어린아이들에게는 어려운 주제일 수 있는 노숙자의 문제를 많은 Awards Winner인 Eve Bunting(글)과 Ronald Himler가 이해하기 쉽게, 그리고 감동적으로 보여줍니다.
앤드루의 아빠는 주말에만 사무실의 수위로 근무합니다. 돈이 없다보니 앤드루와 아빠는 공항에서 노숙을 하지요. 앤드루와 아빠는 공항에서 쫓겨나지 않기 위해 많은 주의를 기울입니다. 매일매일 노숙장소를 바꾸기도 하고, 옷도 깨끗하게 입으며, 짐은 여행용 가방 하나씩만 들고 다닙니다. 밤에는 눕지도 못하고 의자 위에 앉아서 잠을 자지요. 노숙자들 중에서 공항에서 큰 소리로 떠들거나, 거지 같은 옷차림을 하거나, 큰 카트에 잡동사니들을 싣고 다니다 경비원의 눈에 띄어서 쫓겨나는 경우가 종종 있지요. 주말에 아빠가 시내로 일하러 가면, 앤드루는 역시 공항에서 노숙을 하는 메디나 가족과 함께 보냅니다.... 아빠는 내년에 앤드루가 학교에 가야하는 문제로 고민을 합니다. 매일같이 쓰레기통에 버려진 신문을 꺼내서 임대료가 싼 집이 나왔는지 찾아보지만, 마땅한 집을 찾을 수가 없지요. 앤드루는 때로는 자기는 집이 없는 것이 너무 화가 나기도 하고, 때로는 너무 슬프기도 합니다. 공합 대합실에 비행기를 기다리는 많은 사람들을 향해, 당신들은 뭐가 특별해서 집이 있고 왜 나는 집이 없이 살아야 하냐고 소리를 지르고 싶을 때도 있습니다. 하지만 공항에서 계속 노숙을 하기 위해서는 참아야 하지요. 앤드루는 대합실의 커다란 유리창 너머로 비행기가 뜨고 내리는 것을 보면서 얼마 전에 대합실에 잘못 들어 왔다가 며칠만에 간신히 문이 열린 틈을 타서 하늘로 날아간 작은 새를 생각합니다. 그 새는 자유롭게 날아가면서 노래를 불렀지요...

``My dad and I live in an airport . . . the airport is better than the streets.'' As they did in The Wall (Clarion, 1990), Bunting and Himler successfully present a difficult subject in picture book format. A small child narrates the facts of his homeless existence--sleeping sitting up, washing in the restroom, and above all, avoiding being noticed. The brief text runs through all his emotions from a matter-of-fact acceptance to a fierce longing that makes him angry at those who have homes. Using subdued watercolors, Himler conveys the vast, impersonal spaces through which father and son move. He often places them at the back or edge of the pictures, underscoring their need to go unnoticed. This is a serious story but not an overpoweringly grim one. There is a reassuring togetherness between father and son and although there isn't an easy, happy ending, it does conclude on a poignant yet believable note of hope. Both illustrator and author focus on giving the child's-eye view of the problem, and their skill makes this a first-rate picture book that deserves a place in all collections. |
