그래서 큰 토끼에게 말하죠. "내가 아빠를 얼마나 사랑하는 줄 알아? 이 마~안큼" 그리고는 두팔을 활짝 벌립니다. 그러자 큰 토끼도 기다란 두 팔을 활짝 벌리면서 말하죠 "나는 이 마~안큼 너를 사랑해"
작은 토끼는 큰 토끼의 벌린 두 팔이 자기 것 보다 훨씬 넓은 것을 보고는, "내가 두손을 들어 올릴 수 있는 최대한의 높이 만큼, 내가 가장 높이 뛸 수 있는 만큼, 물구나무 서서 두발을 들어 올릴 수 있는 만큼, 저 길 끝의 강에 다달을 만큼 아빠를 사랑해"라고 말하지만 그 때마다 큰 토끼는 작은 토끼 보다 더 높고, 더 길고, 더 넓은 것을 보여 주면서 작은 토끼를 사랑한다고 말하죠.
작은 토끼는 피곤해서 큰 토끼의 품에 안겨 잠이 들죠. 그러면서 말합니다. "나는 저 하늘의 달까지 거리만큼 아빠를 사랑해"
큰 토끼는 "달까지는 정말 정말 먼 거리야"라고 말합니다. 작은 토끼는 잠이 들죠.
큰 토끼는 잠이 든 작은 토끼 이마에 키스를 하고는 속삭입니다. "나는 달까지 갔다가 다시 돌아온 거리만큼 너를 사랑한단다"
재미있는 이야기지요? 그림도 예쁩니다.

Effused with tenderness, McBratney's wise, endearing and droll story is enriched by the near-monochromatic backdrop of Jeram's pen-and-wash artwork, rendered earthy tones of moss, soft brown and gray for a visually quieting effect just right for that last soothing tale before sleep.

In this simple story, a father and son try to outdo one another in expressing their affection. Little Nutbrown Hare says that he loves his father as high as he can reach. Big Nutbrown Hare replies that he loves his son as high as he can reach?which is very high. Father seems to be winning?until the young rabbit tells dad that he loves him right up to the moon?which his father agrees is very far away. But as he kisses his son goodnight, he replies, "I love you right up to the moon?and back." The watercolor illustrations are composed of scratchy lines and large areas of watery washes that are charming, but not too sweet. Large typeface and repetitive refrains invite beginning readers. It's refreshing and realistic to see a father and son relationship that is both competitive and loving.
