[ 책 소개 ]
Caldecott상을 받은 "The Gardener"의 저자 Sarah Stewart(글)와 David Small(그림)이 또 다시 힘을 합쳐 만든 작품입니다.
온 세상이 하얀 눈으로 덮여 있는 1월달의 어느날, Miss McGillicuddy는 창밖을 내다 보다가 정원에 이상한 물체가 서있는 것을 발견합니다. 2월이 되자 그 물체는 새로 자란 나무라는 것을 알게 되지요. 3월이 되자 기기묘묘하게 생긴 그 나무는 쑥쑥 자라 꽃을 피웁니다. 4월, 5월, 6월... 하늘 높은 줄 모르고 자란 나무에 녹색 잎들이 무성하게 매달렸는데, 그 잎들은 바로 달러 지폐였습니다. 7월, 8월, 9월... 돈이 달린 나무의 소문이 퍼지면서 사방에서 사람들이 몰려들어 밤과 낮을 가리지 않고 돈을 한 가방씩 따가느라고 정신이 없습니다. 10월이 되자 돈 마무에 달려있는 지폐들도 낙엽이 되어 땅으로 떨어지고, 11월이 되어 첫 눈이 내렸는데도 사람들은 눈 속을 헤치며 낙엽이 된 돈을 찾습니다. 그리고 12월이 되자 욕심 없는 Miss McGillicuddy는 동네 아이들을 불러모아 돈나무를 베어버리고 추운 겨울을 따뜻하고 보낼 장작을 마련합니다...
새와 강아지를 기르며, 정원을 가꾸면서 욕심없이 살고 있는 Miss McGillicuddy가 돈 욕심에 밤낮을 가리지 않고 몰려드는 사람들을 바라보며 하는 독백... "Don't they ever rest?"

In January Miss McGillicuddy notices a strange tree in her yard. Month by month, as the seasons change, it grows, faster than any normal plant, into a money tree. Friends, then neighbors, then strangers, then a crowd, ``surging back and forth,'' come to pluck its leaves. Each page recounts, in two sentences of restrained text, Miss McGillicuddy's seasonal activities and her observations of the tree and its changes. The illustrations in pale watercolors show the woman as tall, willowy, and faintly old-fashioned. She's a little out of touch with the times perhaps, but obviously at home with her own life and therefore attractive and pleasing. She is usually placed to the side of the picture, pausing in her activity to observe the tree, which is not always seen by readers. This enhances the sense of Miss McGillicuddy as an observer. The only double-page spread shows the crowds scrambling for the money leaves. It is done with black silhouettes against a dark blue and purple sky, separating it pictorially from the pale orderly pictures of Miss McGillicuddy's world. This quirky little story has charm, but it is perhaps too quiet and the woman too passive an observer for most children. She seems so cool and remote from the tree and the greedy crowds that when she takes action and cuts it up for firewood, the sense of completion and problem solved is diffused. Nevertheless, although not wildly ironic like Heide's Treehorn's Treasure (Holiday, 1981), this book, in a quiet way, makes a definite statement about the foibles of humankind.

In January, Mrs. McGillicuddy observes an unusual shape out in the snow. By March it's an extraordinary tree that, in May, bears a profusion of U.S. currency. She shares it with a few children, whose parents arrive in June to share the bounty--the first of what becomes an invasion of people motivated first by ``special projects'' and finally by simple greed. By December, it's all over: the leaves are gone, and Mrs. McGillicuddy is preparing to use the tree for her fire. In his mellow, beautifully drawn illustrations, Small reflects the text's understated tone by focusing on the continued serenity of the good lady's house and garden and her pleasure in her dogs, birds, and flowers--rather than on the not-so-gentle satire implicit in this offbeat parable. Handsome and thought-provoking. |

인터넷에서 본 상세보기의 그림보다는 막상 책을 받아 보니 그림이 좀 별로네요.
Gardener 와 Library 그림이 좋아서 기대를 했는데 에고, ... 그래서 상 받는 책이 다르긴 다르구나 하는 생각을 해봅니다.

인터넷에서 본 상세보기의 그림보다는 막상 책을 받아 보니 그림이 좀 별로네요.
Gardener 와 Library 그림이 좋아서 기대를 했는데 에고, ... 그래서 상 받는 책이 다르긴 다르구나 하는 생각을 해봅니다.
여주인공인 McGillicuddy는 1월에 혼자 거실에서 창 밖을 보다가 정원에 있는 이상한 물체를 발견하고,
2월에는 그 물체가 새로운 나무임을 알게 되고, 3월에는 이상하게 생긴 나무구나 생각하고,
4월에는 짧은 시간에 아주 크게 자란다고 생각합니다. 5월에는 놀랍게도 돈 열매가 맺고, ...
그래서 점차 이웃들이 돈을 따러 사다리까지 갖고 옵니다.
다소 섬뜩한 느낌이 들면서 작가가 무엇을 말하고 싶은 것일까 한참 생각해 보게 된 책이었네요.

같은 마음이였을 듯 싶네요.
The Money Tree 는
무성한 잎대신 지폐가 주렁 주렁~~~
어떤 일이 벌어질까요?
돈 따가느라 정신없는 사람들과는 대조적으로
주인공 Miss McGillicuddy 은 초연하고 의연한 모습을 보이네요.
The Money Tree 라는 독특한 소재의 내용이라
아이와 이런 저런 얘기도 나눠볼 수 있고,
1월부터 12월까지의 자연풍경이 아름답게 펼쳐진 그림도 감상할 수 있답니당~
별 다섯!!!

가로폭이 큰게 조금 그렇기는 한데 저는 좋아요^^
일기형식으로 되어진게 익숙하게 느껴지긴 한데
The Money Tree 라는 제목도 그렇고
그림의 색채?, 느낌도 그렇고 조금 무거운 느낌이네요
어린시절 가난하게 자랐던 저인지라
엄마가 돈걱정을 할 때
큰금액의 종이돈을 내밀며 "엄마 이거써"했던 생각에
눈가가 젖네요
그날 엄마도 눈물을 감추느라 힘들어했었네요
에휴~책은 정말이지 대단한 힘을 가졌네요!
