Children's Literature
Uncle Howie is the photographer at the Lumpkin family reunion. With his camera that develops photographs instantly, he wants to take snapshots of the eight cousins present at the event. He asks the children to line up by age, from youngest to oldest, for the pictures. But this proves to be easier said than done. Each time between when the cousins shout, "Sassafras" and Howie presses the button sometimes goes awry. And so this is the context that this Level 1 book in the MathStart series uses to introduce the concept of number order. The illustrations, albeit ordinary, do support the simple text. Whenever the cousins line up to have their pictures taken, their names and ages appear above their heads. This information helps readers to keep track of the characters and offsets the numbers from the text therefore making it easier for children to learn the featured math concept. Murphy, a visual learning specialist, also includes ways to have more fun with number order and to incorporate the concept into children's lives. Furthermore, he lists three titles, which also address number order. This book is an ideal introductory text for teaching number order to children aged 3 to 6. Incidentally, the book's title is autobiographical in nature as it is what the author's family always said when they smiled for the camera. 2002, HarperCollins Publishers, |
