어린 박쥐 치로는 어두운 동굴 속에서 엄마박쥐와 함께 삽니다. 언제나 엄마와 함께 동굴 밖을 나갔지만, 오늘은 엄마가 치로에게 혼자 연못으로 가서 맛있는 곤충들을 잡아 먹으라고 하네요. 치로는 깜깜한 밤이라서 아무 것도 보이지 않는데 어떻게 혼자 날아다닐 수 있냐고 걱정합니다. 하지만 엄마는 치로에게 자신의 감갇을 잘 이용하면 어둠 속에서도 사물들을 볼 수 있다고 가르쳐 줍니다.

동굴 밖을 나온 치로는 처음에는 어둠 속에서 아무것도 볼 수 없었습니다. 하지만 엄마가 가르쳐 준대로 소리를 내자 그 소리가 반사되어 돌아 오면서 자신의 앞에 있는 사물들을 어둠 속에서 구별해 낼 수 있게 되었습니다.

자신감을 얻은 치로는 두려움 없이 날개짓을 하면서 소리를 내자, 하늘을 나는 기러기떼도 볼 수 있게 되고, 연못 위에 있는 맛있는 곤충들도 볼 수 있게 되었습니다.

곤충들을 배부르게 잡아 먹은 치로는 문득 연못 너머에 무엇이 있는지 궁금해졌습니다. 높은 모래 언덕을 넘어 힘차게 높이 올라가면서 가장 큰 목소리로 노래를 부르자 치로 앞에 놀랍도록 아름다운 광경이 펼쳐졌습니다. 넓은 바다에서 물결치는 파도와 어둠이 점차 물러가면서 밝아오는 동쪽 하늘, 그리고 빛을 받아 반짝이는 파도의 포말들...

Little Chiro, far more adorable than your average bat, thanks to the puppy-dog face Long gives him, is worried about not being able to see in the dark, to which his mother offers the reassurance that there are other ways to see . . . Use your good sense. Kids up on their chiropteran knowledge will see where this is going: Chiro floats through intimidating black washes until he begins to sing, a ray of light emanating from his mouth that illuminates the path ahead as he flies past the woods, through a flock of geese, and to the pond, where he gobbles contentedly on tasty bugs. Paralleling good sense with both a song to light a path and with a bat’s echolocation might require kids to flex their conceptualization muscles a bit, but Long’s gorgeous artwork, in which the warmly hued bat flits through steep, rich darkness, goes a long way toward making this one a winner.
