1800년대, 미국의 농장에서 온 가족이 함께 살던 흑인 노예소녀가 월요일부터 일요일까지 일주일 동안 벌어졌던 일들을 간결한 문장과 아름다운 그림으로 보여줍니다.
매일 새벽, 해가 뜨기 전에 종이 울리면 아빠는 화목을 구해오고 엄마는 불을 지펴 요리를 합니다. 엄마는 항상 우리에게 뽀뽀를 해주고, 아빠는 우리를 꼭 껴안아 주거나 쓰다듬어 주지요. 그런데 오빠 벤은 아침인데도 "굿바이"라고 의미 모를 인사를 건네네요. 어른들은 이제 말을 탄 감독관의 감시를 받으면서 다른 노예들과 함께 밭으로 일을 하러 출발합니다.
오빠 벤은 월요일에도, 화요일에도, 그리고 수요일에도 아침마다 나에게 "굿바이"라고 인사를 했습니다. 그리고 수요일에는 오빠가 직접 만든 예쁜 인형을 선물로 주기도 했습니다.
목요일 아침에 깨어보니 엄마와 아빠가 울고 있었어요. 밤새 오빠 벤이 친구인 조, 리틀 샘과 함께 농장을 탈출해서 멀리 도망을 갔다고 하네요. 감독관은 집에 들이닥쳐서 엄마와 아빠를 때리기까지 했어요. 엄마와 아빠는 밭으로 일하러 끌려가는 동안에도 계속 눈물을 흘리셨어요, 나도 하루종일 오빠가 보고 싶어서 눈물이 났어요.
토요일이 되자 오빠와 함께 도망갔던 조와 리틀 샘이 붙잡혀 왔어요. 다행히도 오빠는 붙잡히지 않았어요. 우리 가족은 밤새도록 오빠를 위해 기도를 했습니다.
쉬는 날인 일요일에는 종소리가 울리지 않아요. 우리 가족은 이웃들과 함께 모두 냇가에 모여서 모세의 이집트 탈출에 관한 설교를 들었어요. 그리고 속으로 오빠를 위해 기도했어요. 새들과 같이 자유롭기를, 모세와 같이 자유로워지기를, 그리고 더 이상 새벽 종소리를 듣지 않아도 되기를...
