국내에서는 "바다에서 고래를 만나면"이라는 제목으로 번역서가 출간된 명작그림책입니다.

어부가 아들과 함께 조그만 고깃배를 몰고 물고기들을 잡기 위해 바다로 떠났어요. 열심히 그물을 던져서 많은 물고기를 잡고 있는데, 아들의 눈에 멀리서 이상한 물체가 물 위에 떠있는 것이 보였어요. 어부는 처음에는 물고기를 잡아서 항구로 돌아가려면 시간이 촉박하다며 아들의 말을 무시했지만, 아들이 잡아 끌자 그 물체가 있는 곳으로 배를 몰고 갔습니다. 그곳에는 놀랍게도 어부들이 버린 폐그물에 입과 온 몸이 칭칭 감겨버려서 숨도 제대로 쉬지 못하고 있는 커다란 흑등고래가 간신히 물 위에 머리만 내놓고 있었습니다.

위험에 처한 고래를 본 어부는 입고 있던 노란 방수복을 벗어서 아들에게 맡기고는 칼 한자루를 들고 바로 바다로 뛰어 들었습니다. 수영을 해서 고래 가까이 접근한 후, 어부는 물 속으로 잠수해서 고래의 꼬리부터 머리까지 온 몸을 칭칭 감고 있던 그물줄들을 끊어내기 시작했습니다. 마침내 자유의 몸이 된 고래는 깊은 바닷 속으로 사라지고, 기진맥진한 어부는 아들이 던져준 구명튜브를 잡고 간신히 배 위로 올라갈 수 있었습니다.

그때 잔잔한 바다에서 기포가 올라오기 시작하더니, 어부와 아들의 눈 앞에 놀라운 광경이 펼쳐졌습니다. 어부의 도움으로 죽음의 위기에서 벗어난 고래가 배 옆으로 높이 뛰어 오르면서 고마운 마음을 표현한 것입니다...

어부와 아들이 위험에 빠진 고래를 도우면서, 우리 모두의 생명이 서로 이어져 있다는 걸 깨닫게 됩니다. 글자가 없는 Wordless Book입니다만, 몽환적이면서 극적으로 펼쳐지는 제시카 란난의 수채화 그림들은 경이롭고 신비로운 바다 이야기 속으로 우리를 데려갑니다.

In this wonderfully illustrated imaginative tale, a father and son take their fishing boat out to sea. After a long day of fishing, the boy notices a distressed whale in the distance and although the father is eager to get home, the boy insists that they investigate. Upon approaching, they see that the whale is tangled up in fishing lines. In a dramatic rescue, the father frees the magnificent creature by cutting through the knotted lines with his knife. The day's events are wordlessly and beautifully conveyed in watercolor and gouache. The vastness and tranquility of the sea are portrayed in rich blue hues. Different perspectives are used to show life above and beneath the ocean's surface. While the little boat floats on the sea's surface, whales are seen swimming below. On one spread the focus narrows to show close-up reflections in the eyes of both the whale and the man as they observe each other. The sky shifts from gray to yellow as the day progresses, ending with a stunning sunset at the story's joyful conclusion. The author's note adds a helpful context to this fantasy. VERDICT This impressive and eloquent tale is recommended for all picture book collections.
