Book Description
Imagine that you are all alone in the sleeping city. In the darkness even the most familiar places take on a different aspect, sometimes beautiful, sometimes eerie and even frightening. Perhaps mysterious things are happening: a giant pterodactyl spreads its wings above the city; far below ghost riders stare from the windows of a long-lost subway car; paintings in a museum come to life. In this fascinating book, award-winning illustrator Stephen T. Johnson takes readers on a nocturnal adventure to an unseen world that just might exist.
From Publishers Weekly
Johnson (Alphabet City) takes a walk on the wild side with this eerie ramble through an urban nightscape. Setting abbreviated text to haunting paintings, he conjures a peculiar nocturnal world, first glimpsed in a scene showing barely discernible, vaguely reptilian creatures emerging from a manhole ("Primal Return/ They escaped into the night," reads the headline-like caption); the last scene presents a snake slithering down another manhole in retreat ("Time for Bed/ Even night creatures must sleep"). Buildings loom menacingly in the fog, and nothing odd seems out of place, whether a spectral subway car carrying strangely dressed passengers ("Ghost Riders/ Last seen in 1906, they vanished without a trace") or a pterodactyl swooping over the illuminated cable strands of a suspension bridge ("Night Wings/ Without a sound, it glided over the city"). The artwork is mesmerizing. Johnson's hyper-realistic style has the look of enhanced photographs, and his palette of inky blues and murky greens adds to the unearthly atmosphere. With its enigmatic illustrations and one-line accompaniment of text to encapsulate the action, the premise is reminiscent of Van Allsburg's The Mysteries of Harris Burdick. Deliciously off-center, the book taps into the universal fascination with night, and although the lack of a definitive story line may prove a stumbling block to some readers, the enigmatic, hauntingly orchestrated journey will entrance others.
From School Library Journal
This book begins with a circular picture of a dusky metropolitan skyline and finishes with the sun rising over the same scene. Individual spreads stand alone instead of telling part of a story. Glowing stones, a driverless taxi, spooky apparitions, creepy creatures, and other unexplained happenings populate these dark, color illustrations with photo-realistic detail. Two brief lines of text precede each full-page picture. For example, "NIGHT WINGS/Without a sound, it glided over the city" is paired with a pterodactyl flying above the twinkling lights of the bridges and buildings below. On other pages, readers encounter "STRANGE PETS/Out for some fresh air," accompanied by an illustration of several red, alienlike critters peering over a motel or hotel ledge. (The sign on the building is partly obscured.) The lack of plot may frustrate those craving a frightening tale, but these eerie night scenes would be perfect material to spark creative writers or story-spinners. |
