Marvelosissimo the Mathematical Magician returns, this time tackling measurement, in this latest installment of the winning "millions" series (If You Made a Million, 1989, etc.). In his systematic and logical style, Schwartz presents an enormous amount of information in an impressively clear and concise manner, beginning with the history of standardized measuring units. Through a series of "bright ideas," the narrative arrives in the modern day, delving into current methods of measuring weight, length, and volume in the US. However, as the complexities of these systems are revealed, it seems another bright idea is needed, and--voil?-the metric system is introduced. Kellogg뭩 busy illustrations are jam-packed with color and exquisite detail. With plenty of dialogue (via text bubbles) and tons of eccentric characters from cavemen to kings to unicorns, the art is as fun to explore as it is functional. To give a sense of real-life scale, inchworms are placed next to foot-long snakes, and a hippo뭩 water bowl is pitted against a cat뭩. Accurately sized rulers are depicted, including a foldout meter at the center. A lengthy author뭩 note supplies further, detailed information about the metric system and a plea to "think metric" in everyday life. Although Schwartz뭩 intention is to make a point about the relative simplicity of the metric system, he does not neglect American standards, and thereby keeps the work relevant--it can serve as an introduction to measuring, and can also function as a reference guide. 일일이 다 읽어주기에는 좀 길지만 그리 지루하지는 않습니다.
길이는 실제 크기로 볼 수 있고 기준되는 길이보다 더 작은 것을 잴 때, 더 큰 것을 잴 때 또 무슨 단위가 나오는지
아주 잘 나타내 있고 후반부부터는 우리가 많이 쓰는 미터, 킬로그램 등이 나옵니다.
1cm가 엄마나 있어야 1m가 되는지 실제 길이로 나와 있습니다.
처음 단위에 대한 개념을 잡는 아이나 많이 들어보았지만 실제로 감이 잘 안오는 어른도 볼 수 있는 책입니다.

역시나 책도 큼직하고 튼튼한 게 맘에 듭니다.
영어에서 나열된 숫자세기...가 생각보다 어렵고 까다로운데
여기서는 큰 수 개념을 다루고 있는데다 측정단위의 유래 및 변천사를 재미있게 알려주고 있어
초등생정도가 보면 좋은 책 같아요.
책 내용은 대략....
오래전에도 측정의 필요성을 똑같이 느꼈지만 측정도구가 일정치 않았기때문에
그 결과가 각기 달라 서로가 이해하는데도 혼란이 있었다고합니다.
(예를 들어, 길이를 발 길이로, 무게를 돌의 갯수를 이용해 측정했다고해요..)
그러다 표준으로 측정자를 고안해냈고 길이를 인치, 피트, 야드, 마일로 나타냈으며,
무게는 파운드를 기준으로 해 2000파운드를 1톤으로 나타냈으며, 1/10파운드를 온스로 나타냈고,
부피는 티스푼, 테이블스푼, 온스, 컵, 핀트, 쿼트, 갤런 등의 단위를 쓰기 시작했습니다.
그러다 1700년대 후반에 오늘날 우리가 사용하는 국제표준 단위들이 쓰이기 시작했는데..
길이는 미터, 무게는 그램, 부피는 리터 단위를 각각 사용했으며,
이를 세분화 해 각각의 단위 앞에 밀리, 센티, 킬로를 붙여 더 많고 적음을 나타낼 수 있도록 했습니다.
