Book description
Tasha Tudor's beloved paintings enhance William Tyndale's classic sixteenth-century translation of the Lord's Prayer.
School Library Journal
"The stately text of the Lord's Prayer...is exquisitely illustrated by the soft, rich glow of Tudor's customary delicate and sentimental watercolors. The backgrounds show rural New England of the Victorian era, filled with charming children, appealing little forest creatures, mischievous Corgi dogs and striped cats."
Booklist
"Images of children in turn-of-the-century New England are sentimentally framed in ribbons or flowers,...allowing them to serve as excellent discussion or meditation starters."
Publishers Weekly
This sentimental, neo-Victorian rendering of the Lord's Prayer does an injustice to the psalm it illustrates. Angelic 19th century children scamper through most of the volume, observing with reverence God's luminous creations. Then the phrase ``Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven'' is illustrated by a picture of three wistful tykes placing flowers on their mother's grave. Similarly, the phrase ``But deliver us from evil'' is accompanied by a terrifying scene of a post-apocalyptic landscape, glowing red while a lone child cowers in the foreground. Parents who want to strike some old-fashioned fear of damnation into their children will be well-served by this book; other familiesreligious or notshould steer clear. All ages.
Children's Literature
This well-known illustrator adeptly "reads" between the prayer lines, with her accompanying twenty-two watercolors that depict sharing, caring, and hope. She richly details many illustrations with a host of animals near or with children. Her point of artistic view and the symbolic repeated circles, echo that of the prayer's theme--God's omnipresence and everlasting care over His children. |
