침대에서 쿵쿵 뛰기를 좋아하는 월터. 아빠는 침대에서 뛰지 말고 잠을 자라고 주의를 주고는 불을 끄고 나갑니다. 눈을 꼭 감고 잠자리에 든 월터의 귀에 어디선가 쿵쿵하는 소리가 들립니다. 윗층에 사는 델버트가 침에서 뛰는 소리죠. "델버트가 뛰는데 나라고 가만히 있을 수는 없지." 자다가 일어난 월터는 침대에서 점프를 하기 시작합니다. 점점 높게, 더 높게... 그러다 갑자기 우지끈하면서 마루가 무너졌어요. 월터와 침대는 바닥을 뚫고 아래층에서 스파게티를 먹고 있는 해티부인에게 떨어졌지요. 그리고 다시 바닥을 뚫고 텔레비젼을 보고 있는 메티씨에게 떨어지고, 다시 또 아래층으로 떨어지고 또 떨어지고.... 월터가 눈을 뜨자 다행히 꿈이었어요. 침대에서 뛰면 안된다는 것을 재미있고 실감나게 가르쳐줍니다.

Like all young children, Walter is unable to resistand, to his astonishment, he finds his father was right! Down and down Walter tumbles, wreaking increasing (if cheerful) havoc in apartment after apartment, and picking up fellow travelers as he goes. At the end, it's up to the reader to decide whether Walter's trip was real or dreamedthough a clever final twist argues for the former. A takeoff on a familiar and usually idle warning, this should be a hit with anyone who has battled over jumping on the bed. Arnold's illustrations, in a style reminiscent of William Joyce, richly depict the nighttime lives of the apartment building's various inhabitants and skillfully capture the sensation and perspective of tumbling through space. Textual puns and subtle visual jokes make this a bedtime story worthy of repeated readings. |
