Ingram
A compilation, selected from various sources and arranged chronologically, of the reminiscences of slaves and ex-slaves about their experiences, from the leaving of Africa through the Civil War and into the early 20th century.
Horn Book
Quotations-chiefly from narratives by ex-slaves are embedded in a clear, forceful, and orderly discussion and running commentary on the history of African Americans. The blackandwhite drawings embody the simple, somber dignity of the text. This thirtieth anniversary edition of the Newbery Honor book contains new author's and illustrator's notes, along with the author's note from the original edition."
Book Description
To be a slave. To be owned by another person, as a car, house, or a table is owned. To live as a piece of property that could be sold... This book is about how it felt. The words of black men and women who had themselves been slaves are here, accompanied by Julius Lester's historical commentary and Tom Feelings's powerful and muted paintings, To Be a Slave has been a touchstone in children's literature for over thirty years.
Publishers Weekly
It is rare to find a book that enables children to identify as compellingly with slaves as this one does. From history-and for our time-there's nothing better than To Be a Slave. |

'A Bill of Sale' ÀÌ Àλó±í³×¿ä.
It was the late forties. I was not yet ten years old.
One day there came in the mail a letter addressed to my father in which a company promised -in big and bold letters - to research the Lester family tree and send us a copy of our family coat of arms.
I was excited, but when I say my father fold the letter as if to discard it, I asked anxiously, "Don't you want to know our family history?"
He laughed dryly.
"I don't need to pay anybody to tell me about where we come from. Our family tree ends in a bill of sale. Lester is the name of the family that owned us."
His words were one of the defining moments of my life.
