무민(Moomin, Muumi)은 핀란드의 오래된 동화에 나오는 귀여운 모양을 한 괴물이며, 핀란드의 작가 토베 얀손에 의해 다양한 책과 만화의 캐릭터로 널리 알려지게 되었습니다. 그리고 일본에서 무민이 애니메이션으로 제작되면서 전 세계적으로 큰 인기를 얻었습니다. 국제 안데르센상을 비롯해 수많은 상을 받은 무민동화는 31개 나라에서 번역되어 전 세계 어린이들로부터 사랑받는 현대의 고전이며, 이미 수차례 만화영화와 텔레비전 드라마로, 또 연극으로도 소개된바 있습니다.

무민은 색깔은 희고 포동포동하며 주둥이가 커서 전반적으로 하마를 닮은 트롤(괴물)입니다. 이들은 핀란드의 숲 속에 있다는 무민의 골짜기에서 사는데, 동화 속에서 친구들과 함께 많은 모험을 합니다.
이 책에서는 11월에 무민 가족의 집을 방문한 손님들의 이야기가 펼쳐집니다.
무민 가족들은 언제나 집에 찾아오는 손님들을 맛있는 음식과 포근한 잠자리로 반갑게 맞습니다. 무민 골짜기에서의 하루가 즐거운 것은 무민 가족의 따뜻한 환대 덕분입니다. 그런데 이런 무민 가족들이 골짜기를 떠나 외딴 섬으로 여행을 떠나 버렸습니다. 이러한 사정을 모르는 손님들은 맞아 주는 이 하나 없는 무민 집으로 찾아옵니다. 무민 가족이 떠난 무민 골짜기에는 대체 어떤 일들이 일어날까요?
스너프킨, 그럼블 할아버지, 헤물렌, 밈블 언니, 필리정크, 훔퍼 토프트는 텅 빈 집에서 무민 가족을 기다리며 시끌벅적한 일상을 보냅니다. 헤물렌이 필리정크에게 자꾸 명령을 내리려고 해서 다투게 되고, 훔퍼 토프트는 밈블 언니와 필리정크가 하는 엄마 무민에 대한 험담을 전혀 믿을 수 없습니다. 그럼블 할아버지는 조상님의 말벗이 되고 싶지만 조상님은 단 한 번도 대답해 주지 않습니다. 고독을 사랑하는 스너프킨은 무민 가족과는 전혀 다른 시끄럽고 소란스러운 친구들 때문에 너무나 피곤합니다.
그러나 손님들은 다 함께 무민 집을 청소하고 나누어 먹을 식사를 준비하며, 조금씩 사이가 가까워집니다. 그럼블 할아버지의 억지가 계기가 되어 손님들은 무민 가족과 자신들을 위해 가족만찬을 엽니다. 즐거운 만찬을 보내고 대청소까지 합심해서 마친 손님들은 원래의 모습을 되찾습니다. 집에 남아 무민 가족을 기다리기로 한 훔퍼 토프트를 제외한 다른 손님들은 모두 자신의 일상으로 돌아갑니다.
이 책이 흥미진진한 모험이나 획기적인 사건 없이도 재미있게 읽히는 까닭은 작은 생물들이 사랑하고 다투고 이해하고 복작거리며 살아가는 하루하루가 바로 우리의 이야기이기 때문입니다.
총 21개의 챕터로 구성되어 있습니다.
국내에서는 "무민 골짜기의 11월"이라는 제목으로 번엯가 출간되었습니다.
