Book description
Imagine that you're walking on the moon. What is it like? For thousands of years people looked up at the moon and wondered about it. Now we know what the moon is like. There is no air on the moon and nothing grows, but there are towering mountains and deep craters and much more! Colder than the desert, the hotter than the desert, the moon is an amazing place to explore.
School Library Journal
This revision of the 1963 edition reports on the Apollo program and its findings. Instances of stridency (``The Moon is a dead world. It has never had living things on it. It is dead, lifeless and colorless'') and oversimpli fication (``There is no water anywhere on the Moon''probable but not prov en) aside, this is a good first introduc tion to the subject, neither too technical nor diluted to blandness. The illustra tions combine a few unimpressive pho tos (they're poorly exposed, or not well reproduced, or both) with a new set of simple, clear, uncluttered drawings, in cluding a map showing the Apollo land ing sites. As with other books in the series, Branley avoids superficiality by severely limiting his topic. Use this to replace the old edition or to supplement more general titles.
Science Books & Films
The book is primarily intended for third to fifth graders, but even kindergarteners will enjoy having it read to them. The children with whom I sharedthe book were stimulated by the text and illustrations and asked questions that went beyond the material presented. Many readers may be surprised to learnthat during the daylight hours on the moon one can see stars and that the daytime sky appears black rather than earthly blue. This book is a good choice for school or home libraries. |
