2009년의 How I Learned Geography를 비롯해서 Snow, The Fool of the World and the Flying Ship, The Treasure 등으로 네차례나 Caldecott상을 수상한 그림책의 거장인 Uri Shulevitz의 작품입니다.

국내에는 "나는 작은 배의 용감한 선장"이라는 제목으로 번역서가 출간되었습니다.

아침이면, 선원 복장을 하고 모형 돛단배가 있는 윗집 아저씨네로 놀러가는 아이는 힘든 계단에도 끄덕도 않습니다. 모형 돛단배와 함께 바다를 항해하면서 폭풍우를 만나지만 선장은 용감해야 하지요! 우리 주인공은 폭풍우에 맞서서 싸웁니다. 그리고 마침내 잠잠해진 바다를 지나서 아름다운 섬에 도착 합니다. 섬을 둘러보는데, 무서운 해적이 나타났습니다. 외눈에 외팔에 외다리에 외귀를 하고 있지요. 하지만 낮잠을 방해받은 원숭이들에게 쫓겨서 보물지도를 떨어뜨리고 달아납니다. 아이가 지도를 줍는 순간, 누군가 자신을 보고 있다는 것을 알게됩니다. 누가 아이를 지켜보고 있는 걸까요?

작가는 어렸을 적에 선원 옷을 입고, 선원 모자를 쓰고, 선원 호루라기를 목에 걸로 이웃집 아저씨네로 놀러가고는 했습니다. 그런데 이웃집 아저씨네에는 무서운 초상화가 걸려있었다고 합니다. 어린 시절의 작가는 그 초상화의 인물이 자신을 쏘아보고 있는 것 같아서 꼼짝도 할 수 없었다고 합니다. 이 이야기는 작가의 어린시절 추억을 담아서 만들어졌습니다. 아이들은 자신의 상상으로 인해서 평범한 사물을 무서운 것으로 바꾸어서 생각하곤 합니다. 그런 아이들에게 이 동화 속 주인공이 당당하게 초상화에 대한 공포를 극복하는 모습은, 스스로의 힘으로 공포심을 극복하는 방법을 알려줍니다.

What is 하드커버? 양장본이라고도 불리우며, 표지가 단단한 판지로 만들어진 책입니다. 판지를 천이나 가죽으로 감싸기도 합니다. 책의 속지는 일반적으로 중성처리된 종이(Acid-free paper)를 사용해서 잘 변질이 되지 않기 때문에 오랫동안 보관하기에 적합합니다. 이 종류의 책은 더스트 재킷, 또는 더스트 커버로 불리는 표지덮개가 함께 있는 경우가 많습니다. 간혹 내부 속지가 콩기름 코팅이 된 경우 고약한 냄새가 나는 책도 있습니다.

The tale is based on a childhood memory from the time when the author/illustrator and his family lived in Warsaw on the eve of World War II.

Shulevitz's latest picture book relays an early childhood memory of visiting a neighbor's apartment, clad in sailor attire, to play with a treasured model ship. As the room's edge transforms into an ocean and island paradise, readers feel transported. The author's understanding of what play looks like on the inside and the phenomena that disrupt such concentration is evident when the boy, mid-fantasy, feels he's being watched and the imaginary world grows hazy. He can't reenter until he confronts the problem in the real room: the dark portrait of a stern man that seems to be staring at him. Shulevitz combines child-size sentences with words that stretch and please: the boy's provisions are packed in a "valise," the climb up the apartment steps/cliff is "arduous," he sails "valiantly." The artist's mastery of the medium produces both warm, dappled interiors and Old Master severity, with convincing fades into the fantastic. The child-centered solution to the boy's problem proves, yet again, that this is the work of a wise and wonderful storyteller.
