Caldecott 수상작인 A Chair for My Mother의 연작입니다.
외할머니, 엄마, 이모네 부부와 함께 사는 로자는 밤 늦게까지 식당에서 일하는 엄마를 기다리다가 소파의자에서 외할머니와 함께 잠이 들곤 합니다. 어느날 이른 새벽에 전화벨이 울리면서 늘상 반복되는 일상에 조그만 변화가 생깁니다. 윗층에 사는 이모가 산통이 시작되면서 출산이 임박해지자 엄마와 할머니 모두 집에서 아기를 받기 위해 분주하게 움직이고, 산파도 일찍 집에 왔습니다. 이모는 아이를 병원에서 낳지 않고 가족들이 축복해주는 가운데 자신의 집에서 낳기를 원했지요.
통증은 시작되었어도 출산까지는 꽤 긴 시간이 필요합니다. 로자는 소파의자에 앉아서 새로 태어날 아기에 관한 상상의 나래를 펼칩니다. 병원에서는 새로 태어날 아기가 아들이라고 이미 알려 줬지요. 로자는 아기의 이름을 벤자민이라고 짓고, 아기를 위해 동전을 모아서 기타를 사줘야겠다고 생각합니다. 그리고 벤자민에게 읽는 법을 가르치고 도서관에도 데려가며 아이스크림도 사줘야겠다고 생각합니다. 그러다 잠이 들었는데 엄마가 깨우는 바람에 눈을 뜹니다. 엄마는 로자를 윗층으로 데려가서 새로 태어난 아기를 보여 줬습니다. 아기를 둘러싼 모든 가족들이 행복해 보였습니다.
그 날 이후 로자는 아기를 보러 수시로 윗층으로 올라가고, 아기를 안아주거나 목욕시키는 것을 도와줬습니다. 할머니는 아기와 산모를 위해 소파의자의 천을 새로 갈려고 하고, 엄마는 낡은 소파 대신에 새 소파를 사고 싶어 하네요. 로자는 모든 것이 변하고, 자신과 아기도 자라서 어른이 되어도 자신의 추억이 깃든 소파의자를 왜 보관해야하는지를 엄마에게 설명해 줍니다...

In her fourth book about Rosa, Williams once again devises a tale filled with warmth and vitality. With Aunt Ida and Uncle Sandy living upstairs, the girl welcomes their newborn into the family. She participates in caring for Benji, and even plans for the fun they will have as he grows older. The story's central focus, however, is Rosa's beloved, velvet-rose-covered chair. Grandma suggests that the worn and stained fabric needs replacing, and her mother mentions buying a new one. Rosa puts down her foot. "Don't you even care about history?" she responds, reminding her mother how they bought the chair with saved dimes and quarters, and how it is now a part of the family. Even if she becomes president and moves to the White House, Rosa claims, the chair will go too. Her mother hugs her and replies, "Rosa, you sure do say the strangest things." Rich watercolor illustrations featuring the child and her extended family give a comfortable feeling to this heartfelt tale. In this national economic turndown, a story that emphasizes sharing with family and friends and realizing what is important in everyday life will be a welcome choice, and children who have loved Rosa before will find this book equally appealing -
