Book Description
The reader is asked to find various animals and objects and a boy named Seymour in the photographs.
From the Publisher
Seymour, a character in both Can You See What I See? and Dream Machine, has his very own story in this 8x8 paper-over-board storybook!
Publishers Weekly
Youngsters can sharpen their visual skills with another Walter Wick offering, Can You See What I See? Seymour and the Juice Box Boat, third in the paper-over-board series. The text asks readers to scan the photographed landscape of blocks, toys and figurines to find objects as Seymour gathers tools: "Can you see 2 ducks, a pencil that's red?/ Can you help Seymour find some thread?"
Children's Literature
Seymour with his cart full of tools moves through a colorful array of photographs looking for objects he needs to make a boat. He finds an orange juice carton, scissors, a small saw, a ladder, a drinking straw, an anchor, and a sail. Then he draws a diagram to show the pieces of the boat and how they will be put together. A coat of paint on the outside and his name printed in large letters finish his craft. A toy tow truck with thread and a paper clip pull the boat to the water. Each double page spread features a different view of the playroom with interesting displays of toys and creative materials. Part of each page has certain objects pictured individually on a side insert with the challenge for the reader to find them in the picture. Most of the objects are relatively obvious, making this book a good choice for young children. Although all of the items that Seymour uses to make his boat are in the pictures, they are not usually the highlighted items. This offers youngsters the opportunity to go back through the book to find the things used for making the boat. This book is part of the "Can You See What I See" series.
School Library Journal
In this whimsical search-and-find story, readers join a little toy man as he gathers together an assortment of items, builds a boat out of a juice box, and sails away on a sea of blue. The clear, neatly composed photographs show colorful scenes packed with all sorts of interesting things, while the rhyming text prompts children to seek out particular objects (photos of the articles appear next to the words, rebus style). A helpful "Discussion Guide" offers pointers on building vocabulary and noticing details. Just right for the youngest seek-and-find aficionados, this engaging offering will sail right off of the shelves.
Kirkus Reviews
The creator of the I Spy series is a genius at designing and photographing tiny landscapes and kaleidoscopic dioramas. The reader immediately senses something familiar, yet new in this paper-over-board. Once again, Wick offers the same photo-scapes format of diminutive objects, but here the participant is lead through the pages by a little toy named Seymour (who appeared in the first two of the series). Also, the sets are much simpler and essential. The same home-spun do-dads appear repeatedly throughout and a lone turtle never misses a page. The text invites the reader to find certain objects on every page, like a couple of ducks or a round yellow button, all the while asking us to keep our eyes on Seymour. It soon becomes apparent that Seymour is up to something. His wagon becomes fuller as he wonders through the block maze of scattered teeny toys. A blueprint is ultimately revealed, and it's discovered that Seymour has a master plan. He also delivers the added treat of a nifty little craft idea. This is more than a seek-and-find; it's a charming, interactive novelty. |
