어느날 제크 피핀은 앞에 가던 쓰레기 수레에서 떨어진 하모니카 하나를 줍게됩니다. 제크는 열심히 하모니카를 연습해서 스스로 멋지게 연주하는 법을 터득합니다. 그런데 제크가 가족들에게 하모니카 연주를 들려주자, 처음에는 모두 놀라고 환호하다가 곧 잠이 들어 버렸지요. 연주를 할 때마다 잠이 드는 가족들에게 실망한 제크는 자신의 연주를 들어줄 청중을 찾아 가출을 해버렸습니다. 하지만 비단 가족들 뿐만 아니라 제크의 연주를 듣는 모든 동물들도 곧 잠이 들어 버렸죠. 뗏목을 타고 강을 내려가던 제크는 강도를 만나거나, 코요테에게 잡혀서 위험에 처하지만 그 때마다 하모니카를 불어서 모두 잠이 들게하고는 탈출할 수 있었습니다. 천신만고 끝에 집에 돌아온 제크는 자신의 하모니카 연주를 병원에서 수면제 대신으로 사용하는 등, 유용하게 쓰일 수 있다는 것을 알게 됩니다. 그리고 아빠가 사 준 새 하모니카로 정식 연주를 할 수 있게 됩니다...

This deeply funny picture book immediately joins the ranks of Steig classics. When a harmonica falls from a garbage truck onto Zeke Pippin's trotters, the young pig's life changes completely. At every opportunity he practices his scales (``even out in the rain'') until he is ready to serenade his family. But he has scarcely begun his premiere performance (``regaling them with the prelude to La Traviata'') before his audience is snoozing and snoring. Outraged, Zeke leaves home. On a precarious journey downstream he soon discovers that the mouth organ puts absolutely everyone to sleep. As he hastens home he is beset by bands of baddies with only his trusty harmonica to help him out. Sensitive Zeke with his musical hopes and wounded pride is a pig with plenty of child appeal-especially amusing are illustrations of him stalking archly away from his sleeping family (``How can I go on living under the same roof with such nincompoops?''). Steig adds some nifty wordplay to his already exuberant language (e.g., ``with the half-moon half helping, Zeke threaded his way through a confusion of trees and tangled vines''). The gleeful narrative simply sparkles.

When Zeke Pippin finds a harmonica and plays it for his family, they instantly fall asleep. Furious, the young pig storms off and travels downstream on a raft, where he meets an egret and a boatload of tourists, all of whom doze off when he plays. He finally realizes that the instrument is enchanted and regrets his hasty departure from home. Heading back, he meets three villainous dogs that rob him and a wicked coyote that threatens to eat him. Both times, his magical music entrances the savage beasts and he returns safely to his loving family. Reminiscent of both Spinky Sulks (1988) and The Amazing Bone (1983, both Farrar), this is another whimsical journey into family relationships that focuses on magical objects and the ingenuity of youth. Zeke is an endearing character and his music leads readers into a delightfully zany plot. Steig's typical pastel watercolors, depicting pigs and other creatures with human characteristics and charming facial expressions, fill each page. No one paints quite like Steig-even inanimate objects exude personality and life. A humorous and heartwarming book.
Author Description
William Steig's drawings appeared regularly in The New Yorker since 1930. He also wrote and illustrated books for children, most recently his memoir, When Everybody Wore a Hat. 우리 아이는 이 책을 읽고 나더니,
Zeke Pippin 처럼 잠들게 해 주겠다고
엄청 시끄럽게 하모니카를 불어댑니다. ^^;;
그래도,
좋은 책을 만나서 변화하고 성장하는 아이를 볼 수 있다는 장점이 더 크죠.

 아이가 하모니카를 배우고 싶다네요 |
이책 그림책인데 분량이 좀 되네요.몇번 반복해 읽기도 좋고 특히 윌리엄 스타이그를 아이도 저도 좋아하는 작가라 얼른 구입했어요.실베스타와 매직페블과 THE AMAZING BONE 나 치과의사 드소토 선생님 시리즈,핏츠..
이책 그림책인데 분량이 좀 되네요.몇번 반복해 읽기도 좋고 특히 윌리엄 스타이그를 아이도 저도 좋아하는 작가라 얼른 구입했어요.실베스타와 매직페블과 THE AMAZING BONE 나 치과의사 드소토 선생님 시리즈,핏츠 피자 와 함께 윌리엄 스타이그 만의 이야기 진행방식이 있어 서 이책도 역시 재미도 있고 초등 교재로 쓰일 만한 이유가 있겟다 싶네요.
이 책을 읽은 후엔 아들 녀석 아빠가 쓰시던 하모니카를 가끔씩 불어 대더니 정식으로 하모니카 레슨을 배우고 싶다고 하네요. 악기를 배울려는 의지가 없던 아인데 그것 참 신기하네요. 이야기도 해피엔딩이고 우리집 녀석도 책을 통해 무언가 할려는 의지가 생겨서 저도 해피합니다. 집에 같은 작가의 책들을 모아보는 것도 영어 뿐만 아니라 다방면에서 도움이 될껍니다.

 생각보다 쉽지는 않아요~! 하지만, 읽고 싶은책! |
권장연령이 5세부터 되어있어 선택했는데, 생각보다 쉽지 않아요.
엄마인 저도, 사전을 많이 뒤적거리게 되네요 ^^
글자도 조금 작고 많은 편이라 읽기 쉽지 않을 것 같지만, 새로운 내용과 잘 묘사되어 있..
권장연령이 5세부터 되어있어 선택했는데, 생각보다 쉽지 않아요.

글자도 조금 작고 많은 편이라 읽기 쉽지 않을 것 같지만, 새로운 내용과 잘 묘사되어 있는 그림으로 한페이지 한페이지 즐겁게 읽어가고 있어요.
글보다는 그림에 눈이 많이 가고, 하모니카의 이야기가 어떻게 끝날지 읽을 수록 기대되고, 읽고 나서는 미소지어지는 책이예요.
