On their way to market to sell a donkey-their last remaining possession-an old man and his son encounter much criticism from fellow travelers. In their efforts to please everyone, they end up sans donkey, having learned the hard lesson that ``...to prosper, they must follow their own hearts.'' Young has placed this familiar LaFontaine/Aesop fable against a spare Mideastern desert backdrop, creating a striking picture book. The pastel and collage illustrations are uniquely conceived in delicate shades of sky blue, maize, peach, pink, and lavender, changing hues as the sun moves across the sky and day progresses from dawn to dusk. This subtle version of the tale conveys a sense of resignation and contemplative fatalism that is underlined by the insignificant human figures dominated by the landscape. Versions by Brian Wildsmith (Oxford, 1987) and Tomie dePaola (in Favorite Nursery Tales, [Putnam, 1986; o.p.]) use simpler language and emphasize the facile humor. However, Young's elegant retelling is an excellent variation and well worth acquiring. |
