아기 하마 피오나는 태어나서 처음으로 크리스마스를 맞이하게 되었습니다. 동물원에 사는 모든 동물 친구들은 크리스마스를 맞이할 생각에 엄청 들떠 있습니다만, 피오나는 처음 들어보는 "크리스마스"가 무엇인지도 몰랐습니다. 궁금해진 피오나는 크리스마스가 무엇인지 찾아나서기로 합니다.

하얀 눈속에서 놀고 있는 북극곰에게 하얀 눈세상이 크리스마스냐고 물으니까, 북극곰은 피오나를 반짝반짝 장식이 되어 있는 커다란 크리스마스 트리로 데려갔습니다. 그리고 산타 썰매를 끄는 사슴들도 만나고, 겨우살이로 만든 예쁜 크리스마스 장식도 봤습니다만, 여전히 크리스마스의 의미를 알 수 없었습니다.

집으로 돌아온 피오나는 엄마 하마에게 크리스마스가 무엇인지 물어보자, 엄마는 내일 크리스마스에 친구들과 같이 지내면서 친구들이 얼마나 행복해 하는지 보게 되면, 마음 속으로 크리스마스가 무엇인지 느낄 수 있을 거라고 말해 줍니다.

크리스마스 아침이 되자 피오나와 동물원의 친구들은 모두 크리스선물을 받고 즐거워 합니다만, 동물원에 새로 전입 온 코알라는 아무 선물도 없었습니다. 피오나는 혼자서 슬퍼하는 코알라에게 자기 스카프를 묶어주면서 크리스마스 의미를 깨닫게 됩니다.

하얀 눈, 트리, 선물, 반짝반짝 빛나는 전구 장식들 모두 크리스마스를 의미할 수 있지만, 가장 중요한 것은 바로 "사랑"이 크리스마스의 진정한 의미라는 것을 알게 됩니다...

Cowdrey illustrates in a cozy, inviting art style that--while it doesn't offer much verisimilitude relating to Fiona's backstory--will appeal to younger readers invested in the characters. A predictable narrative arc (Fiona discovers that the true meaning of Christmas is giving to others) is nevertheless sweetly uplifting.
