Author Biography
Jane Simmons is the author and illustrator of the acclaimed Daisy series of picture books. She lives on a wooden fishing boat in Cornwall, England, with two lovebirds, two dogs, and a chicken named Freda.

Daisy is an adorable baby duckling who finds it hard to comply with mama duck's command to stay close. Daisy quickly finds herself all alone and frightened, but just as Daisy fears the worst, mama duck appears. Daisy learns that her adventures can continue while she stays securely at her mother's side. This board book is excellent for preschool classes because of the fun and colorful illustrations. In this effectively illustrated, gently told cautionary tale for very young children, Mama Duck urges Daisy to stay close and come along, and although Daisy tries, her curiosity gets the better of her. She chases dragonflies and bounces on lily pads, until she suddenly finds herself frighteningly alone, a little golden figure almost overwhelmed by the rich greens and blues of the pond and its rushes, in which mysterious creatures lurk. This cautionary tale from Simmons explores no new terrain, though the duckling Daisy does. As Daisy and her mother go for a morning float, the mother advises Daisy to stay close. "I'll try," Daisy chimes, but there are just too many delights to partake in: minnows, dragonflies, lily pads, frogs. So rapt is Daisy that she loses sight of her mother. Daisy's world becomes a menacing place: Pike lurk in the shadowy depths, a raptor screeches in the sky above. Daisy hides, but something rustles and "is getting closer, and closer, and CLOSER." Just when preschoolers will be at the edge of their chairs comes the revelation that the threat is the mother duck, back to find her offspring. This picture book has just enough suspense, without being too scary; deep green reeds dominate the splotchy, roughly textured painting. The dramatic images can be viewed from a distance, making this an appealing read-aloud for story hours. |
