No need to wait 'til Christmas to unwrap presents in Dear Santa by Rod Campbell. In this board book, St. Nick tries to find the ideal gift; the text offers a clue about each one he considers, the answer hides behind a flap. About a beach ball, he muses: "Too bouncy, thought Santa. I'll send something else. So he wrapped up a...." This continues until the final spread where a feline (with fur to touch) awaits.

Santa wraps gift after gift until he finds the perfect one for the child who requested "something special for Christmas." Readers can pull open the "wrapped gift" to see what Santa had thought of before finding the perfect gift. Toddlers may expand their vocabularies with the adjectives Santa uses. One gift is rejected because it is "too small" (it is a toy car), another because it is "too scary" (it is a tiger mask). Others are "too bouncy" (a ball), "too messy" (finger paints), and "too noisy" (a trumpet). Santa brings a kitten, with a soft, furry spot the reader can feel. Various sizes and shapes will keep young children interested. They can anticipate what is in the package, or in subsequent readings, remember what it was. This board book follows the format of Campbell's Dear Zoo (Little Simon, 1986); Santa tries to fill an unnamed narrator's request for something "special," but keeps changing his mind as his offerings seem too "bouncy," "scary," and so on. Each present has a sturdy flap that can be opened, revealing the contents. The gifts themselves are not particularly exciting, and children won't be able to guess from the wrappings what might be hidden inside, but they will still enjoy opening the flaps. The artwork is colorful and crisp against a white background, and the final purrfect present has a patch of soft fur that kids will love to touch. A surefire hit for toddlers. |
