Book Description
Twelve of the world's best illustrators and paper engineers team up to celebrate Brooklyn's past and present in this incredible tour-de-force pop-up book jointly published by the Brooklyn Public Library and Little Simon.
Directed by Robert Sabuda and the Movable Book Society, this breathtaking pop-up book features each artist's unique three-dimensional depiction of familiar landmarks such as the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, historic brownstones, the Prospect Park carousel, Junior's Delicatessen, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Coney Island, Grand Army Plaza, and the magnificent Brooklyn Bridge! This collaborative effort is also the centerpiece of the Brooklyn Public Library's first large-scale pop-up book exhibition that opens in September 2000.
Children's Literature
Anyone interested in Brooklyn can find here a wealth of information about its brownstones, the Grand Army Plaza and Public Library, the Museum of Art and Children's Museum, The Botanical Garden, Prospect Park and its Carousel, the Brooklyn Bridge, and Coney Island. The facts, including history and description, are detailed along the bottom of seven double pages. But it is the pop-ups that greet us as we turn the pages that make this book really special. Each one is designed by a different artist or artists, with a special Sendak that includes Walt Whitman on the cover. And each uses devices that happily contribute to the feel of the site, for example the flipping leaves in the garden, or Sabuda's stunning Museum facade. What a great way to discover or rediscover Brooklyn. 2000, Little Simon/Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing Division. Ages 8 up. Reviewer: Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz |
