표지가 두꺼운 판지나 보드지가 아닌 비교적 얇은 종이를 사용해서 만든 책이며, 실박음질 대신에 풀로 제본처리하는 경우가 많습니다. 일반적으로 하드커버나 보드북에 비해서 가격이 저렴합니다. 소프트커버로 불리우기도 합니다. 책의 이음새 부분이 접히거나 휘는 내구성이 그리 좋지는 않은 책입니다.

Now in its second season, HarperCollins's reissue of 22 Sendak classics continues. This time, his collaborations with Ruth Krauss take center stage. In Charlotte and the White Horse, first published in 1955, creamy pages frame Sendak's softly lit illustrations of a girl who convinces her father to keep a wobbly legged horse and cares for him until he can stand on his own. Sendak's delicate watercolors suit the dream-like mood of a boy who accomplishes all that he sets out to do in his imaginary world, in I Want to Paint My Bathroom Blue (1956), also by Krauss. A boy's imagination also comes to the fore in A Very Special House (1953) by Krauss, as the artist depicts the hero creating a home filled with a turtle, a giant, a very old lion and "some monkeys and some skunkeys." Oversize pages brim with the creatures as well as his house's "very special" furnishings. Open House for Butterflies (1960) takes a similar format to these collaborators' classic A Hole Is to Dig, and lastly, Hector Protector and As I Went Over the Water: Two Nursery Rhymes (1965) by Sendak conveys as much plot through the artist's wordless spreads as with the minimal text. 어린 아이들도 좋알할 만한 내용이네요.

누런 갱지같은 배경에 파란 멜빵 바지를 입은 아이의 모습이 도드라져 보이는 그림이
소박하면서도 눈길을 끕니다.

생각보다 아주 얇은 책인데 노란속지에 흑백의 그림이다.
거기에 주인공으로 등자항 소년만이 채색이 되어 있다. 이런 책들중에 참 좋은 책이 많다.

소년이 그린 집은 흑색으로 그냥 마구 그려놓아 화려하지도 특별할 것도 없다.
하지만 그가 상상속에 그리는 집은 아주 특별한 가구들 상상속에서나 가능한 그런 가구들로
채워져 있고 동물들이 함께 하는 그런 아주아주 별난 집이다.
이 책과 함께 상상의 나라로 잠시 여행을 보내주는 준다면 아이는 얼마나 행복할까?
