Velveteen Rabbit은 어린이 동화책의 고전입니다. 미국 선생님들의 모임인 NEA(National Education Association)에서 뽑은 "Teachers' Top 100 Books for Children"중 22위로 뽑힌 책입니다.
토끼인형은 자신이 인형이 아닌 실제 토끼라고 생각하지만 뛸 수도, 움직일 수도 없지요. 하지만 토끼인형은 소년이 가장 좋아하는 인형이지요. 소년의 사랑을 많이 받으면 받을수록 토끼인형은 점점 낡아집니다. 색이 바래고, 털이 빠지고... 낡을대로 낡아진 토끼인형은 소년이 병에 걸린 후 다른 잡동사니와 함께 버려지는 신세가 됩니다. 그런데 기적이 일어났어요. 요정이 나타나 버려진 토끼인형에게 생명을 불어 넣어 준 것이죠...
