These four bright board books, based on My Very First Mother Goose, the award-winning classic, bring the timeless rhymes to the youngest children in a user-friendly format featuring large letters, a generous page size, and sturdy board pages. Full color.
Children's Literature
Part of "The Mother Goose" collection, the selections in this small board book are taken from the larger book by the compiler and illustrator. The book is durable and filled with bright, cheery pictures for each of the eight rhymes. Among the better known selections are the title rhyme, My Black Hen, Davy Dumpling, Tom Tom the Piper's Son and Jack Horner. In the latter, a little mouse is pulling a plum out of a pie while the cook and cat nap in the background. Once you have seen one, you will want the three other titles in the series (Wee Willie Winkie, Little Boy Blue, and Pussycat Pussycat). 2001 (orig. 1996), Candlewick, $4.99. Ages 1 up. Good news for babies everywhere! Literature and lore expert Iona Opie and the indomitable Rosemary Wells have teamed up to create a series of Mother Goose books in a sturdy, cardboard-paged, gnaw-proof format. In Humpty Dumpty and Other Rhymes, eight favorite rhymes are delightfully illustrated, from "Humpty Dumpty" to "Little Jack Horner." Wells comes through again with adorable, expressive bunnies and shyly smiling mice. Larger (and more charmingly illustrated) than many board books, this whole star-studded Mother Goose series is guaranteed to delight your favorite little one. PreS. These two board-book spin-offs each present eight rhymes selected from Opie's My Very First Mother Goose (Candlewick, 1996). The smaller format with colored pages is congenial, though the reduction of the art and the elimination of details from the much larger volume sometimes create a sense of vagueness about the characters or events in the rhymes. Overall, though, Wells's cheerful animal characters and domestic scenes will appeal to children in spite of small losses in clarity. And if the pictures no longer illuminate some of the rhymes so generously, the lilt of the language has accounted for their abiding appeal anyway.?Margaret Bush, Simmons College, Boston
