Part of the "My Very First Mother Goose" series, the selections in this board book are taken from the larger book by the compiler and illustrator. The book is sturdy and filled with bright, cheery pictures for each of the eight rhymes. Among the better known selections are the title rhyme, To Market, To Market which features a fancy red sports car; Hey Diddle Diddle, which shows a little dish with feet and spoon resting on top running away and fiddling cats surrounding the text; and Sing a Song of Sixpence in which sweet mice and bunnies fill the pages. The pictures are sure to delight observant kids. Once you have seen one, you will want the three other titles (Wee Willie Winkie, Humpty Dumpty, and Little Boy Blue). - Marilyn Courtot

One of the most important books in a baby's collection is a volume of Mother Goose. I've heard that many of the rhythms and rhymes echo a mother's heartbeat. That would explain why these verses can soothe a seemingly inconsolable infant into sleep, or bring smiles and giggles to a bored baby. Choosing a particular volume depends on personal taste. Recently Rosemary Wells collaborated with Iona Opie to create a wonderful new book, My Very First Mother Goose. PreS--These two board-book spin-offs each present eight rhymes selected from Opie's My Very First Mother Goose (Candlewick, 1996). The smaller format with colored pages is congenial, though the reduction of the art and the elimination of details from the much larger volume sometimes create a sense of vagueness about the characters or events in the rhymes. Overall, though, Wells's cheerful animal characters and domestic scenes will appeal to children in spite of small losses in clarity. And if the pictures no longer illuminate some of the rhymes so generously, the lilt of the language has accounted for their abiding appeal anyway.--Margaret Bush, Simmons College, Boston |
