엄마는 화가 났어요. 야단을 쳤지요. 그리고는 드디어 외출준비 끝.
할머니와 같이 물감놀이를 하던 아이들이 "와 엄마 예쁘다! 영화배우 같아요" 하면서 달려듭니다. 엄마는 물감범벅인 아이들을 피하면서 "내몸에 손대지마!"...의자에 걸터앉으면서 간신히 위기 모면.
하지만... 하지만... 아이들과 할머니의 환송을 받으면서 하룻밤의 평화를 얻었다고 생각하며... 아빠 팔짱을 끼고 가는 엄마코끼리의 엉덩이에는...
그림과 이야기가 너무 잘 어울리는 유머러스한 이야기입니다. 물론 문장이나 단어도 쉬워서 어린이들이 읽거나 엄마가 읽어주기에도 부담이 없어요. 그림과 문장의 세밀한 부분부분까지 읽다보면 즐거움과 행복함을 느끼게 해주는 정말 좋은 책입니다. 특히 막내코끼리의 천진난만한 행동은... 각 페이지 마다 막내코끼리에게서 눈을 뗄 수 없게 만드는군요.

보드북(Board Book)은 표지와 속지가 모두 두꺼운 카드보드지로 만들어진 책입니다. 잘 찢어지거나 구겨지지 않기 때문에 나이가 어린 아이들을 위한 책으로 주로 만들어지며, 책 내용도 원본에 비해 축약되는 경우가 많습니다. 주로 두장을 겹쳐 단단하고 오랫동안 눌려있을 경우 페이지와 페이지가 붙을 수 있습니다.

Four little elephants don't make it easy for two big elephants to have a night out. Trying to get ready to go out to a dinner-dance with four little elephants underfoot is certainly a challenge for Mrs. Large. With one playing in her makeup and another in the kitchen, she wonders, "Can't I have just one night when I'm not covered in jam and poster paint?"

Five Minutes' Peace delivered into the hands of readers a near-perfect reflection of a family's typically calamitous morning; now the adult elephants are dressing for an evening out, and their well-meaning but high-spirited children won't leave them alone. They stuff Mrs. Large's hosiery with toys, mess with makeup and clatter around in high heels. She, of course, loses her temper, which has the effect of subduing her children. But she inadvertently sits on a paintbox and goes out unaware that her dress is adorned with small bright patches of color. Sharp-eyed readers will spot this development; others will want to go through the story again to find out when it all happened. Five Minutes' Peace fans may not find the antics in this followup quite as funny as its predecessor. But with its resemblance to real life, this continuing saga of the beleaguered Mrs. Large and her boisterous offspring is still a delight.

Murphy's second story about the Larges continues the household adventures of an elephant family with four preschool-age children. While Mr. and Mrs. Large get ready for the office dinner dance, the children mess and meddle until the exasperated Mrs. Large shouts, ``Can't I have just one night to myself? One night when I am not covered in jam and poster paint?'' As she walks out the door on the arm of her husband, however, sharp observers will note that although she may have a night out, it is not without decoration. Murphy's ink line and colored pencil renderings of household and elephant details are apt: a child-made picture of Babar hangs in the kitchen; trunks are useful as well as affectionate appendages. Left-hand text is accompanied by small vignettes which contribute to the narrative rather than merely decorate. Told from a mother's point of view like its predecessor, Five Minutes' Peace (Putnam, 1986), the story will definitely appeal to beleaguered parents.
